Phoenix... - by Fafhrd

I lived in Phoenix many years ago and absolutely loved it. But then, I love feeling like I've been french-fried and microwaved anyhow and realize that kind of environment isn't everyone's cup of tea. The clubs I used to go to were fun and sometimes exciting, but I doubt that they exist anymore since Phoenix has grown/changed rapidly over the last decade. There's plenty to do if you like sightseeing and the Grand Canyon is only a 4-5 hour drive away; the real Tombstone is only a short trip south and I really enjoyed that little road trip as well. I especially loved the Sedona area most of all. What brought me back to the Midwest was the fact that I seriously missed the changing of the seasons. If you miss the snow you have to go up into the mountains; the cold of winter is different in Arizona than it is in the Midwest - no humidity to act as a buffer, so the cold goes right through your bones. Also, it always seemed just wrong somehow to see Christmas lights strung up on cacti in people's front yards - never did get used to that. :weird:

I also forgot to mention that the only other good thing that I liked about Arizona was that they sell hard liquor in grocery stores, like Nevada, which doesn't happen (yet) here in Washington. So you can easily purchase your frozen pizza and whiskey in only one stop.
They also seem to have quite a few nice museums that I visited while there.

My condolences. I lived in Pheonix for 5 months (which wasnt that bad) and then Tucson for 3 years, before I headed out to college in the infinitely better California.
There's nothing in Arizona. Nothing except sand, cacti and racism.

I've been out here twelve hours (apartment hunting and checking out the city), and I'm seriously thinking I'm going to change my mind. This is literally the worst fucking city I have ever been in. Beyond the heat and the oppressive flatness of the place, the entire downtown area just grinds to a halt after 7 pm. If I were in L.A. right now I could find 10 different bars that would not only be open, but have decent and lively crowds. Here I found ONE bar, which had a decent crowd, but wasn't crowded, and I couldn't get served. The wait staff didn't even acknowledge I was there.
The architecture is SHIT. The roads are asshole, and I can't judge the food because NOTHING IS OPEN.
I'm going to try looking at more apartments tomorrow, but I honestly want to change to an earlier flight and go home and send an e-mail to HR saying that my circumstances have changed and I won't be able to relocate, and take the severance package.
I'd rather be unemployed in SoCal than making any amount of money out here.

The one in Arizona. The asshole of these United States.
Erm....no. Thats Oklahoma, not Phoenix. The downtown area in the town I lived in there doesn't grind to a halt after 7PM. Rather, it comes to life with teenage wannabe thugs, drug dealers, and muggers.
Between that, oppressive heat, and lack of anything to do except eat out I spent most of my time indoors while I was there.
