raph what kinda film are you using?

Thanks Muz (And Ducky too! :o)
I boosted the luminosity/contrast a bit on the b&w pics in Photoshop, I can send you the PSDs if you want to compare with the original scans. :) The F5 is not set on anything particular, the D90 has the Color settings set to "Vivid" with saturation further boosted to +1. At the moment I'm using the P mode instead of full manual as I'm trying to get what work and what doesn't with minimal waste (especially with the film one). Worked pretty good so far.
I'm really blown away by how the prints look. I used a generic no-brand ISO100 color film, (I ordered a pack of Fuji Velvia 50 but it didn't arrive on time for that particular trip). I started shooting on film again a few weeks ago with my crappy point-and-shoot I hadn't used since the late 90s, to record a paintball party, and I finished the roll with some random street photography, and I got a couple of spectacular shots. Scans just don't do it justice.
I'm not giving up my D90 but I'm reconverted to film for now... Can't wait to see the results with the Fuji rolls, with that camera and lens I think I'll have a winner :) It's very exciting!

Those are lovely raph! :D
I obtained a new camera recently too - a DSLR that I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA how to use properly. I mean, I won it in a competition but I've only ever used compacts like the Olympus Trip, so it's very intimidating. :(

Woah that's cool! :o What model?

That's a nice freebie for sure. Wasn't a photography competition, was it?
What lens(es) has it got?
Anyway, yeah film is nice. The online video scene has been developing a whole new raft of techniques to make DSLR footage look more filmy (every generation of things they gotta start over. Even Technicolor themselves are getting in on the act lately). There's a certain element of romanticism to why we like it, but it's also true that in a lot of non trivial ways it's better.
I've been looking for locations for some music videos and took a few snaps along the way. Didn't do anything special to them partly because I needed to see how they'd turn out as-is.

These shots are amazing Muzman. I especially like "Alley number one again", "Blue Period" and "Under Destruction". What settings do you use to get such results?
PigLick on 25/5/2011 at 09:08
also "Hollow", where is that, thats not the old factory in Maylands(Burswood) near the river is it?
Muzman on 26/5/2011 at 06:34
Cheers. That one's South Fremantle powerstation. Which one are you talking about? That's probably worth a look, by the sounds of it.
Thanks raphy. I dunno what settings are responsible for them being decent exactly. I shoot on full manual pretty much all the time, for the exercise (which bugs people who are standing around). The white balance is usually set somewhere inbetween the light sources that are present. I think I had just a tweaked version of the Standard picture style (those preset colour profiles you can play with. I dunno what Nikon's call those) dropping the contrast, saturation and sharpness a bit, nothing amazing (I was supposed to be using the neutral one really)
They're mostly pretty long exposures. A couple of seconds at least. Sometimes I remember them being even longer than the metadata down the page says.
There's a photo graphic rule of thumb I've seen people mention where you're supposed to shoot for f8 (provided your lens isn't f8 to being with I guess). But if you check the tests for a given lens, where it's actually sharpest is all over the place. All of those were probably using the Tamron, since it's my best all round lens, and that's sharpest at 5.6. So lately I start there and work around that, using what ever exposure time will keep the ISO lowish.
I think that's it.
I still want to see Matty's prize winning work (if that's what happened)

No indeed, it was a straightforward 'answer the simple question' style competition and it was the third prize (the soddin' ridiculous list had the 6D and the 60D as first and second prize, IIRC). It came with an 18-55mm IS lens, so I would assume that I would need to get a decent macro lens and perhaps a better telephoto one too.
Edit: I did however go all hipster camera snob and buy a nice Crumpler case for it.
