Barcelona is awesome. Unfortunately the street crime in the tourist quarter almost ruined it for me. I wouldn't even mind the whores on every corner...
"Hey darling, you like sex?"
"No."
"Don't you like me?"
"You're really nice, but I cannot afford you. I'm POOR."
"How much do you have?"
"About 5 euros."
"That's okay, we go over there. You like sucky?"
"No, thank you M'am."
First my cheap-ass camera was stolen by a guy who actually managed to grab it out of my pocket. Then later that day two guys tried to rip me off my skateboard. Not so sneaky this time, they just came up yelling at me in Spanish and grabbed for the board. I let loose a moment, then pushed it hard into his chest and ran into a nearby Irish pub. There a conversation with a waiter and the owner ensued.
"We're closed."
"I know."
"Then what are you looking here for?"
"For the moment, safety."
"Hey we're closed."
"I already told him, says he's looking for safety. Must be trippin' or something."
"I'm not tripping. There are two guys out there, they just tried to steal my board. I'll be gone in a minute."
"They tried to steal it? Well, welcome to Barcelona! Haha."
I should also mention that Barcelona is an awesome town to skate, it's like one smooth concrete wave, all sidewalks lowered to zero at every intersection. And much of the time I rolled on marble or something very close to it. Doesn't get much better.
Also the first night there, I was picked up by five Italian girls: I asked them for the way, said I was lost and they asked me to come with them to a disco. On the way I taught one of them to skate. We danced half the night, shared drinks and the funny hat one of them was wearing. They even brought me back to my hotel in a sidestreet of the Las Ramblas street (since I'd been lost before). Unfortunately they left Barcelona early the next day.
All in all a great city but I'd get a hotel far from where I was. Other parts of the city seemed much more normal and safe.

I've been here close to five years, I've only been robbed once, a pickpocket took my phone out of my bag in a terrace. Other than that I've never had any problem and I have my wallet in my jean pocket most of the time. But yeah, you have to be careful in the touristy parts.

Money well spent raph, I can hear water lapping the pier. It picks out light really well.
