I rather enjoy the assault rifle. Max out skills, get the laser, level the sight at head level of a crowd and let loose! Instant deaths everywhere! And the explosive rounds are great fun too. Useful when you don't wanna waste GEP rockets on tiny bots.

The assault rifle has been a roaring machine of death since before I was thrown into the MJ12 slam. It's silenced, lasered, and I've thrown a ton of recoil and accuracy mods at it, so I hit where I aim and I kill what I hit. I do kind of wish I hadn't put a scope on the stealth pistol, I think given its short-range nature it'd be a lot more effective with a laser sight, but I'll manage. For the most part I only use it when I'm so close to a target I can't miss anyway.

Technically lasers are set to aim slightly down depending on the gun to account for the bullet arc, but I don't think they programmed that into DX.

Awesome. Makes no sense whatsoever, but awesome. I'd rather stick with the better killing power of the unsilenced pistol, but I need something discreet, and the mini-crossbow takes too long to drop guys.
In the future, weapons have gone rapidly downhill. I mean, assault rifles only fire in burst shots rather than being fully automatic (a replacement for the M16 would
not be limited to burst fire rounds), pistols can no longer be silenced, and every weapon is completely inaccurate and useless for a trained super-agent.

And they take forever to reload... I think he loses the mags in that big trench coat of his.

You can just hold down the button, you know: BAM! Automatic weapon.
It's calculated as individual bursts of 5 rounds because that way all the various replication calls for propagating who's firing what and when and at who and from where are essentially reduced by a factor of 5.
This was important back in DX's heyday.

It's a completely unconventional number, though. And to not have automatic is a step backwards. A new assault rifle meeting such standards that it would be equipped by seemingly every major securiy force in the world would not break standard convention of Safe, Single, 3 Round burst & Automatic. The only moden weapon limited to burst fire in major military forces is the M16 - and that, by all counts, is a horrible design.

Not that I want to rain on your parade, but when I pull the trigger, bullets don't stop coming out until I release it. So, what?

To take this topic full circle I'm just in the middle of playing through with pistols! I Laser'd my pistol of course and rampaged through the opening levels, killing whatever I could see with the greatest of ease. I got Mastery in pistols around the MJ12 prison and so added a Scope to my pistol to use it for sniping. Despite having Mastery, I found this really nerfed it and firefights were a lot harder. So basically my point is Laser never stops being stupidly overpowered! Since then I've started branching out into tranqing guys so I guess it's a good thing ;)
