I always considered it the strength or at least the peculiarity of the Thief world to be focused on that City without practically leaving its walls (except for the two islands in TMA/TDS or maybe Cragscleft which still isn't more than the usual "in the fields" scene in old dramas).
I like the idea of 1.) seeing more and more of this City (and there will always be a new place to find I guess) and I like 2.) the possibility of it being the only City at all. After all other towns or kingdoms etc. would render the Keepers and their - as it appeared to me - universal pretention pretty small and useless. Of course I don't want it to be an obvious Matrix-kind-of-thing, but more places outside the City would IMHO blur the focus and make Thief more like any other fantasy roleplay system.

I don't want to go to other cities, but they should continue to exist. The Mage Towers were beyond The City, but the Mages were surprised the City's old sewers, from times before, still reached out that far.

Yes, that's what I meant with the too obvious Matrix thing. Of course there should be talk about wars and other cities etc., but it shouldn't be too close.

Agreed. The City is just a very important factor to Thief. Leave the other cities for the FMs.

A fan of Emil Pagliarulo's work, eh? :thumb:
I don't know, yet. I had no idea who he was until I found his journal scans on one of my KOMAG discs. It seems wrong he doesn't write in the Thief script, though. :)
BTW, is he responsible for the back story and general layout of the City?

Naw. He's just a great level designer. He joined LGS late and worked on Thief Gold some, before really working on TMA. All the level designers contributed greatly to the building of The City as a whole, but the major ethos and idiom of that universe was worked out for the most part before Emil showed up. He did a great fan review of TDP for Vault before he became an LGS employee.
His major contributions were that he did voice work for Song of the Caverns as an opera singer, added Little Big World to Sword, then was the primary designer for Life of the Party and Precious Cargo. He wasn't the primary designer for Eavesdropping but he contributed enough to get a credit. I can't remember what he did for TDS, besides the Kurshok, but he was there for a relatively short time to have a hand in it. The answers are archived here.
