I'm not sure if they ever changed this, but spawning was one of the things that drove me insane in Planetside. Somewhere during beta they decided to add very long spawn timers, which were still present when I tried playing a few months into launch - I don't mind spawning somewhere else, but when my timer to do so is up to 15 MINUTES because some asshole repeatedly killed me the second I exited the pod at every base I tried, it makes you want to bomb a church. On one hand, it adds a strong desire not to die - on the other hand, given that you can't always control your death in games like this, it adds an even stronger desire not to play.
Well, it's not 15 minutes but it does get up a bit if you die too much and it also depends where you respawn - at bases with a biolab benefit it takes the shortest, at towers and AMSes it takes the longest. I forgot the exact numbers but I think it was around 20-30s or so at most and down to 2 or 5 seconds with the biolab benefit.
Though they could tweak it a bit and let you respawn instantly if you choose to do so away from the fight, say in another base, but still have the timer if you choose to dive right in. I don't think it could work if they removed it entirely. How would you be able to successfully assault a base when you have to run 50 meters from your AMS every time you die, while the defenders can respawn instantly and jump right in?

That spawn delay was essential else the battles would've been never ending. I was in battles the like of which you'll only see on youtube now. Hopefully there will be a big take up but with all the other game distractions i, sadly doubt it'll ever be as epic as back then.

If they keep the population limits as they are in PS (133 per empire per continent), then it WILL be epic, at least the first few months - you only need to be able to lock 2 continents per empire for there to be real epic fights and no constant ghost hackings. That's 800 people per server, which PS2 will most certainly get.

I've 5 beta keys to give away on this. PM me if interested, come join us in some epic battles. They all seem to be epic btw, this game is bonkers.

I have been playing Planetside 2 more than anything else lately. It still has some balance problems and a lot of technical issues, but at its core it's a great concept and preserves and expands on everything that made the first Planetside great.

Once it exits beta on the 20th, we're gonna need to share character names and/or form a clan.

Yeah, definitely. Just gotta agree on which server and which faction. Right now I'm Terran Republic on US East.

They keep giving us thousands of certs in the run up to release, to let people max stuff out and test I guess.
But I'm baffled now. It seems that a lot of the modifications I have can not be used together. For example, I though increasing Flak Armour just increased my defence against flak, but it seems I have to select it in my loadout and thus discard my Nanoarmour.
I understand the way the upgrades work on the weapons, like either having a forward grip OR a recoil compensator on the Rail slot, but the armour, health pack, grenade stuff isn't arranged this way and because of the interface I didn't realise I couldn't use them together until I realised I had 2 grenades on me (Grenade Bandolier) but that by doing this I couldn't have my extra rocket slots.
Very disappointed. A lot of wasted certs here. Does this mean my Magrider can only have improved armour on the sides OR the top OR the front?

Yeah, a lot of them occupy the same slot, best to check the certs list- in general each 'category' on a vehicle can only equip one. So on my Mosquito, I can equip flak armor, or stealth, or auto-repair. In another category, I can increase max speed, turn rate, vertical thrust, etc- but only one.
I think they're planning a full wipe for release though, so I wouldn't sweat wasted certs.
Edit: Oh yeah, for those who haven't played this at all, I'd note that the population cap is 1800 per server, 600 per side, spread across 3 continents. It's incredible how big some of the battles get. Flying above a column of fifty main battle tanks and support as they push towards a base is a really awesome sight.

I have a feeling I'll enjoy this game, but let me say that it takes the award for "worst introduction to a video game ever" without argument.
So I create my character. I hit the settings button before I hit play - only lets me adjust graphic settings. Okay, that's fine, I think. I'll just get started and set up my controls and what not once I get going.
I hit Play. I can tell by the audio dialogue that it plans on dropping me straight into contested territory without the Sanctuary stop that the first game provided. Okay, whatever, let's do it.
Plummeting to earth cinematic, just like the first game. Neat. I land. I take 2 steps. 300 billion laser beams instantly fly across my screen from players who haven't even loaded yet. I am dead within 3 seconds of starting the game, presented with a vaguely explained respawn screen, and still have not been able to set my keybinds.
I'm smart / resourceful enough to work my way around, but the majority of gamers you're relying on to keep a MMO going aren't as patient or understanding. They're working hard to stick to the statistic that supposedly only 5-10% of players finish the intro of any video game.
