There are no lasers from players who haven't loaded. Your drop pod is a target.

There is a very steep learning curve in this game, yes. I still don't fully understand how my team takes a base because I only play as Heavy Infantry and so I'm just a tank and sunderer (and infantry hunter).
Its best to watch some of the tutorial videos before you play.
But once you get into it you'll experience the most epic battles in computer game history.

Every base has a number of control points depending on size, each contol point has a number (Typically 1-3) of 'player slots'.
You take control of a base by having a number of players stay near each point and 'hack' them, The takeover is faster the more slots are filled at each point and the more control points you have players at. A meter shows the takeover progress when you're near a control point.
All the icons floating around your HUD will show a description if you keep your crosshair over it, the control points are visible as icons too.
Sometimes there are force fields preventing access to a structure, they can be brought down by destroying the generator powering them.
It takes a while to learn the game but it's still pretty easy to join in.
In a squad or platoon, the leaders can place beacons that shows where your current target is, it shows as a beam of light in the world and is marked on the map. A good way to learn is to simply join a random squad and hang out with them, it's more fun too as you suddenly get the attention of the squad's support soldiers. :)
I'm a veteran Planetside player myself but there are a lot of new stuff to learn, for me it's the equipment and weapon bits that taken the longest, certs and stuff. :)
The game really brings my computer to its knees (I have a sub-standard CPU) but i'm still having a great time even though a prefer travelling around with a squad outside the bigger battles and attacking small bases. :)

Oh, I know all that. It's the generator destroying and fixing and the terminal having I don't know about.
I played Planetside 1 too.
The weapons in PS2 have changed a lot from the beta. A lot more of them, they seem more accurate and higher powered from the start (my LMG is much more effective now, even compared to my more expensive upgraded one from the beta) and the cost for everything seems much lower.

Do you mean the certification cost to unlock new stuff? The main complaint I've been seeing is that the weapons are too expensive currently due to the slow rate of cert accrual.

They are much cheaper than they used to be.

Fixing a generator and anything else really requires an engineer, that's what i mostly play :) I've never destroyed one but my guess is you shoot it or blow it up with an explosive charge. They are quite quick to repair so my guess is it doesn't take much to bring one down.
I still haven't figured out all the buildings and structures, there are many towers that seem to have uses i don't know of yet.

Ugh - I completely forgot to post my server here before launch. Bed a bad TTLGer.
Me and various RPS guys are playing as Vanu on Connery (US-West) - friend me (Aerothorn) and catch me when I'm online for an outfit invite.
SubJeff on 6/12/2012 at 07:16
I'm on Miller, the EU server that RPS play on. Shame we won't meet. I'm also Vanu. Magrider strafe ftw.
PS. What template is your website built on?

This sounds fun! I always regretted not getting in on the first planetside.
Any tips for an utter newb? I tried logging in this morning just to see how steep the learning curve is and..yeah, given that I just got dumped into a field surrounded by people in batwings dogfighting ("blue guys vs green guys? I was expecting red guys! WHICH DO I SHOOT?"), had about five minutes to look at all the HUD elements and go "UH...", didn't even know what class I was (they don't ask when you create a character)...I'm guessing it's fairly steep.
Then I got run over by a tank.
Quite possibly a friendly tank.
