I gave it a few hours but it's a slide show on my computer. Most of my time with it was spent inside a purple/blue dome, trying to distinguish blue enemies from purple allies, and a screen full of moving icons. I still don't know what was happening.

Your team will have blue markers over them with their names. Squad members will have green.
They enemy either have no markers or have red ones if they've been spotted and identified as enemy by other members of your team.
If you see something that you think no one else has seen press Q and you'll announce it and possibly tag it - eg, a tank coming up from the flank that no one else is facing.
I think the default class is Light Infantry. They have rocket packs so holding down jump will get you higher than you thought and they seem to have the best anti-infantry guns. I'd experiment with the classes then choose your role and stick to it or you'll waste certifications on stuff you'll never use.
You may find yourself bumbling about in massive battles but eventually you'll end up in a calmer area where you can run around and see how things work without all the hectic tanks and bombs and aircraft and lasers. If you go to Indar and try get to the north of the centre (fly there and land/eject) you'll find a huge base complex inside a massive crater. Hardly anything goes on there (on the 3 servers I've played on anyway) and you can run around taking pot shots at things. Alternatively just explore near your warpgate. Amerish is nice to just stroll around anyway and near the warpgates there are lots of base structures with turrets and jump-pads to mess around with.

I fight on Esamir only, it's nicer to my weak computer since it's a polar region. You can boost performance quite a bit if you do it right, here's a guide:

I play as TR on one of the EU servers, Ceres i think. I've always played as TR and one of the benefits is that all enemies are blueish ;)
I really miss the TR MAX lockdown feature from PS1, hope they bring it back, the TR MAX suit do have anchors by the feet so they were at least designed for it originally.
