I'm sure some of you will definitely disagree with this, but I would like to play as a female character. Females are the underdogs in gaming, there aren't enough games made with them, and when a game is made with a female, then it's usually in a bad way. Females are exploited for their sexual prowess, because gaming companies know the majority of gamers are men. A game that I thoroughly am enjoying at the moment is The Longes Journey, becuase, for once, the female in the lead role is not being used as a sexual tie in to get males to buy the game. Funcom really used April (the lead character in TLJ) an appropriate, respectable manner, and in Deus Ex 2, I know ISA could do justice to a woman character and use her in the same respectable, and appropriate manner as Funcom did.
Anyhow, the reason why I like playing female characters is that there's already too many games out there where you play as a male character. I don't want to be a man anymore (at least not in games), yet I don't want a damn game that's simply going to use the woman as a sexual selling point just to rack up sales figures either. I want to be a bad ass, normal, everyday, hell, even ugly if I have to be, conspiracy solving, nanoteched out, augmentated, Anna Navarre. A woman that is respected for her brains and not necessarily her breast. J.C. Denton could stand for Jacklyn Catherine Denton...a damn good name if I must say so.
Well, this is something I'd like to see, and maybe it's because I grew up with 4 sisters and no brothers, and I know I want to see my sisters respected for their brains and not their breast or ass.

I agree with you. Although, in Deus Ex they didn't include a female main character option as this would necessitate them having re-recorded lots of speech.

Ya know, I believe they were going to make it so you could play as a female character, AND a male character. But, it's a little too late to change this now, wouldn't you think?

Actually, no, it's not too late. When the game first starts up, you know how you can dictate what your character looks like, you can choose a woman on this screen and the voice acting should change accordinly. This is the simple way, lets take it the more creative and challenging way, shall we :)
Start the game as JC as a male, and at one point, of course really early on, you get to make decisions, if you make the right/wrong decisions, this is dependent upon the plot and how the developers want to do it, you can become a woman. You could kill off JC all together and become the newly augmented woman, or you could simply choose to leave JC at a headquarters or somewhere and play as a woman. Of course this method would take more scripting, programming, voice acting, etc., but it's something that could be done.

Yes, but it would also be something that would be really wierd. I don't think a game has EVER done this.

You never know, if you're lucky there might me a mod or something that lets you play as a female character *cough*.

As some of you may already be aware - I didn't want to announce this so early, because it is early in production, but there is a pro-level female JC mod being made.
I hate to sound exactly like the DX2 people, but I sure do understand where they are coming from when they say: It is still too early to discuss the details outside of the mod group.
And the post about all the voice acting is absolutely correct, BackDoorBandit. We are having to re-record - in a pro studio situation, not a cheap mod situation - all of the dialog. It is a huge, huge project. I am shelling out personal cash for some of the actors, and it's in my studio. One main reason we didn't want to announce it yet is because we don't know how we are going to distribute something this physically large. We may not be able to. Meaning I'm taking a personal risk here. I didn't want to announce early for that reason, as well.
As a matter of fact, I wonder if you heard about this mod and made this post to force an early announcement. Well, it worked.

Colcobb,
Don't you think I know about The Cassandra Project....duh :) I'm the one that talked to Dan and Saam about hosting you all. As a matter of fact, Kieron and you all are supposed to be giving us some exclusives....Where's the goods
TechImmortal,
I don't know of any female character besides Cassandra. Are you on that project? If not, then I have no idea what you're talking about, but it's great to see another Mod with a female lead.
TechImmortal on 6/6/2001 at 05:53
No it's not Cassandra. Cassandra appears to be what I learned to call a TC - more than just a mod - a Total Conversion.
(Counterstrike is a TC of Half-Life; Deus Ex is arguably a TC of Unreal - you get the idea.) TC's are very cool, massive projects. I wish the Cassandra people much luck and can't wait to play it.
No, ours is "just" a mod, but a huge mod - it will allow you to play the original Deus Ex as a female JC.

Wow, Tech, this is something I really look forward to.
Although I have to confess I first started to play as a female character because all those testosterone-ladden grunts of the male characters (Unreal being a prime example) grated on my ears, I'm in total aggreement with BackDoorBandit's views. But then I ceased to be a horny teenager long before I started to play games on my computer. :)
