I've dabbled with Thief on my Steam Deck and I was surprised at how well it played, the trackpads provided so much functionality you'd usually lose with a regular gamepad that it didn't really feel like a 'compromise' at all. I still prefer playing it on mouse and keyboard at my desktop computer, but it's perfectly playable!

I know that kb+mouse vs controller precision is not comparable in shooters, but Thief is such a minimalist and slow paced game, it is not a problem at all, I mean how much precision do you need to knock someone out from the back? You hardly need to aim. Playing with controller encourages me to play more fan missions than ever and I'm a happy man

"O Master Builder! We ask Thee to bless our brother who hath strayed from Thy service. Forgive him the transgressions of his gamepad days, and look with favor on his gameplay in Thy name. Keyboard and mouse, fire and forge, purify his spirit and draw from him all peripheries which do not meet Thy plan."

I use (
https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/15367-xbox360-controller-xpadder-profile/#comment-326477) this controller config with Xpadder and Thief 1/Thief 2 except I disable left stick movement and let Thief's native "enable joystick" take over because it provides extremely smooth analog movement. However, left stick camera look up, left, right, down is a mess and has a lack of smoothness because the guy mapped his Xpadder scheme to mouse movement for the camera, I suspect. Is there any way to get smooth camera up, down, left, right with the right stick? Otherwise this is a perfect controller scheme for me for Thief 1 & 2.

Fortunately, analogue keyboards are a thing. Can recommend playing Thief with a Wooting.

I can relate here.
Playing with controller-based setups (I play with DS4) also allows you to more casually share your gameplay with family members or guests.

Thief needs a lot of buttons, but if you're willing to mess around with Steam's controller configuration, you can get it working really well. On my Steam Deck I've got movement and camera on the joysticks, but when I pull the right trigger to get the bow out it enables the gyro so I can fine tune the aim. And holding one of the back buttons converts the joystick to lean buttons. It took a little getting used to, but I wouldn't go back now.
