Playing TDS for first time... - by Casper_aa

I am about to play through Deadly Shadows for the first time and have noticed quite a few tweak threads which may make it a better experience. There also seems to be a texture pack, which i downloaded but haven't installed yet.
My question is whether i should play through it vanilla the first time or should i try enhancing it a bit through tweaks and the texture pack?
Im new to Thief, and just finished the first two games which were great so i am moving on to the next one. I played the TDS demo and enjoyed it but i didnt like the blue highlight on doors etc and the fact that it was harder to tell what was loot and what was worthless (Though that may just be the new engine).

Do some tweaks.
John P's (
http://www.john-p.com/textures/Thief-DS/index.shtml) Texture packs are awesome and really boost the visual quality of the game without ever looking duff or out of place.
The (
http://www.fileplanet.com/142083/140000/fileinfo/Thief:-Deadly-Shadows-v1.1-Patch) 1.1 Patch is a must if you want to play on expert difficulty.
My other favourite 'must do' tweaks are to (
http://www.ttlg.com/FORUMS/showthread.php?p=1041415#post1041415) change the default movement speed to walk (running everywhere like a FPS goon just ain't thief) and killing the lock pick HUD (there's a .ini file you can hack to hide it ~ T3UI.ini in the game's System folder: change the x,y and z scale of the LockPickHUDWindow section to 0). Lock picking is so much better without it (you have to 'feel' your way around locks with the mouse, it's really quite cool) though you might want to play through the first level with the display so you know what to do.
The minimalist mod is commendable also and pretty much tweaks everything in one go, but I'd save it until later. Between you and me 3rd person view (which the mod disables) is a useful replacement for T3's unsatisfactory leaning.

You could also use ascottk's leaning mod...which fixes the leaning a lot.

Thanks for the tips! :cheeky:
The texture pack gives me choices for Garretts scar and outfits, any reccommendations?
Just as a reminder the options are:
Large scar, Medium scar, no scar, masked.
And
Bare arms, clothed arms, Thief 1 inspired.

I always chose no scar and Thief1-inspired. About ascottk's leaning patch, is it still online at some place? I only found the AnimationTweak at that time and I guess all the links are dead here as well.

Does the minimalist mod actually allow you to choose which tweaks you want and which you don't want?

No, it doesn't - at least not without hacking files and tweaking things all over again.

Am I confusing it with another T3 mod? Maybe the Tweaker?

Yes (well, in terms of: it doesn't allow changing). The MP only allows you to add optional altered HUDs while the TDS Tweaker has all those check boxes and sliders.
