Playing Thief for the first time ... - by gkkiller

What the title says. This is a game that I've wanted to play the moment I knew about it. I love stealth, and first-person stealth is even better. That's how I found out about Thief (the new one), and traced its roots back to TDP. In preparation of the upcoming release of NuThief, I'm playing through TG for the first time, and plan on doing TMA next (and eventually TDS). I'm currently four weeks or so in, and on Return to the Cathedral, trying to remain as stealthy as possible - except undead missions, where I basically run for my life trying to stay alive - and taking and dealing 0 damage (apart from blackjack KOs). Thoughts on the missions so far:
Lord Bafford's Manor: The sheer scale of this mission excited me when I first saw it, and I went through trying not to alert enemies or do much damage. It's a brilliant mission, and that sense of satisfaction I got from successfully sneaking into the throne room was immense.
Break from Cragscleft Prison: Easily my favourite mission yet. I was shocked near to death when that first zombie just jumped up in front of me, and the atmospheric sound design really helped. The chilling screams of the prisoners really taught me what immersion meant - the tension of sneaking past a guard, the relief you get when you get through a particularly difficult bit ... wow. Plus, the prison was creepy as hell and the platforming was amazing.
Down in the Bonehoard: I didn't particularly like this, but the latter bits with the traps and Fireshadows I found fun. Also, burricks. I am now a burrick fan forever, and I'm proud to say I went through this mission without damaging a single living thing.
Assassins: I really liked this too. It's another amazing mission, and KOing everyone and roaming around freely in Ramirez's mansion gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling. It felt a bit too easy, until the last bit (leaving the mansion), when I had to get home, preferably without getting caught by a guard. Minus points for no undead, but plus points for gratuitous burricks.
Thieves' Guild: Apathy is all I feel on this one. Metal floors everywhere, and a massive sewer that seems to be inhabited not by rats but by spiders and cutthroats. I liked it until the casino - then the tension fell apart when I decided to blackjack everyone and simply bunnyhop everywhere instead of inching my way across metal. Oh, and I went from the first guild leader's house to the second, then realised I needed a piece of loot from the first one's house and had to go all the way back, and then return to the second's so that I could finally escape. Man, that was ... not amazing.
The Sword: Didn't like this mission too much either. It was fun until I got to the upper floors - everything became too confusing to navigate there. I had a major derp moment when I found the sword's location and passed it once or twice unknowingly. Still, it was better than Thieves' Guild.
The Haunted Cathedral: This mission was a blast. Burricks, zombies, roof-hopping, loads of loot, and a nice spooky atmosphere. It didn't creep me out too much, but it was enjoyable. Oh, and the stained glass textures were gorgeous. I accidentally led some zombies to the burricks and a few burricks died though :(
The Mage Towers: Ok, I guess. Too much keyhunting, and mages are not nice. But the tower puzzles were lots of fun, except Fire Tower. The central keep was fun too, seeing as it was just a load of guards and a couple of servants.
The Lost City: Another awesome mission. I spent a day and a half trying to figure out how to get the loot in the beginning (before jumping into the sewer), but it was filled with puzzley bits and lots of exploration. The ledge on the way to the Talisman scared me to hell, since I have a problem with heights :/ and the fire elementals felt almost omniscient, knowing where I was the moment I turned my back. Still, loved it.
Song of the Caverns: I liked this mission. It dragged on a bit, but the opera house was a nice setting, and blackjacking the audience was fun. A little too much marble tiling for my taste too, but this mission really taught me to use the walk key more often.
Undercover: This felt kind of like Hitman :P I liked this mission, it was fun. Especially blackjacking everyone so that I could escape unimpeded. I admit, I had to refer to a walkthrough for the switch puzzle, but entering through the roof was badass, and I liked the readables, because lore is awesome.

You like the Mike Ryan Missions :thumb: (Cragscleft, Assassins, Lost City), I would say you have good taste as I am also a big fan of his.
Anyway, welcome. Once you are done with the original games, there is T2X (fan campaign for Thief 2) and heaps of good to excellent fan missions to play.

Ahh, a rookie! I envy thee. You're still at the beginning of the adventure. Lots of good (an by good I mean getting the poo scared out of you) stuff to come. :D

Yeah, same as zacharias, Mike Ryan's missions own. You're one of the first people I see who didn't really enjoy The Sword.

Wait 'til you get to Strange Bedfellows. Because then, I'll be waiting to see that you hate it just like the rest do, or love it just like I do ;)
I might be a thief, but if I have a sword and a rather nice old combat system, why don't I use it?

I'll confess I didn't enjoy The Sword that much, either, when I played it for the first time, for largely the same reason as the OP; while I did like the bizarre atmosphere of upside down rooms and platforms in the middle of a void, I was frustrated by the difficulties in navigating the place. In fact, I still experienced some of those difficulties when I replayed TG a few months ago, even though I had a vague recollection of the general layout.

Boy, are you in for a treat when you get to the FMs. This band of geniuses here put the LGS releases to shame - albeit using consumer tech not available in the 20th Century...

Thanks for the warm welcome! Tbh I was expecting a shitstorm of people all "You don't like The Sword? lol n00b!" since apparently a lot of people love it. Anyway, I'm about halfway through Return to the Cathedral (just found Murus' candle for him) and the atmosphere creeps me out. This game is about as old as I am and it's managing to scare the living shit out of me :/ wow, I must be a real wimp.

Several times i've read posts from people saying they never made it past this or that level. Too scared. Haha

It's always nice to have somebody new show up and say how great the original Thief games are. :) Welcome to the addiction that is Thief which has kept many of us here for well over 10 years! Once you're past the original games, start digging into the fan missions. You won't be disappointed and best of all, they're free!
