Thanks for the warm welcome! Tbh I was expecting a shitstorm of people all "You don't like The Sword? lol n00b!" since apparently a lot of people love it. Anyway, I'm about halfway through Return to the Cathedral (just found Murus' candle for him) and the atmosphere creeps me out. This game is about as old as I am and it's managing to scare the living shit out of me :/ wow, I must be a real wimp.
Thief is great at building a very convincing atmosphere. It plays a lot of its design to its strengths in sucking the player in unknowingly. From the way Garrett moves, to every little sound he makes to couple along with his motions, his sense of agency in the game world, the fact that the player can never really do anything to actively disconnect themselves from the game, barring some really unlikely exceptions.
It's one of my favorite things about Thief, and the dark engine in general - the sense that you're in control of a human, not a sliding block. The snowman collision box model at work!

As a fellow newcomer (relatively) to the series, welcome! Thief hooked me just about the instant I stepped into Bafford's manor, and it never let up. Thief excels at making you feel vulnerable and unsafe, something that most games only manage briefly
For me, the undead are Thief's strongest point. The sound design and atmosphere do a great job of making you fear the zombies and haunts. It elevates them from being just another fantasy enemy to something terrifying and relentless, making you feel vulnerable.

Welcome :D I saw your review and it's pretty nice.:thumb:
I see that you didn't like The sword or down in the bonehoard though, meh guess since it's your first time though  Yeah I actually got stuck at those two levels too because I was so confused and remember actually skipping down in the bonehoard, lol:laff:

I was hooked by Bafford's, too. But Cragscleft was when I realized I was in for something truly special.
Some people have had problems getting the cutscenes to work. I really hope you're not missing out on those.

No, no trouble there. They worked fine once I patched my game. They are really beautiful, and the art style is unique. Stephen Russell's voice works great too with that slightly dated scratchy audio sound. As someone said, the sound in this game is sex for the ears :P

Aaand done with RTC. It took me the longest time so far I think, both in playing time and real-time. I've been stuck on it for about a week, and in game time, 1 hour 24 minutes, which is more than most of the other missions. I conquered my fear of the spookiness of the cathedral, but there's still something horrifying about an angry zombie moan from behind you as you lockpick a shut door. Resorted to a walkthrough for most of this mission, but this came back to bite me in the ass. Towards the end, I started backstabbing Haunts like my walkthrough told me ... and then I checked my objectives screen and found that I'd already completed the 'help Murus' objective, and apparently the 'kill Haunts' objective is on Expert only -_- so I have 3 backstabs and 90 damage dealt extra.
Anyway, the cutscene right before this was evil. And creepy. And how is Garrett still able to see clearly with only one eye?

I watched cptgreenbear's Let's Play on youtube, and he wore an eyepatch for at least one mission after Garrett lost his eye. :D

I liked The Sword as it had such a strange atmosphere. I remember getting lost and going round in circles and everything was just so weird, it just got to me.

Have you had the "post-RTC-crap-your-pants-wtf's-going-on" experience yet? I envy those of you playing for the first time. Wait until you start on fan missions!
