Alright, just done with Escape!, and it was ... well, ok. The basement made me wonder exactly how it used to be before the whole mansion turned into the woodlandy hell it is now. Good enough map design, but I felt a little lost, and I rushed through the first floor bit without exploring too much. I also didn't set foot on the upper floors, since I much preferred to skulk around the lower floors. I found it kinda ironic that in The Sword, the focus is on the upper floors, whereas in Escape! you're mostly roaming the basement.

I'd say the first two thirds or three quarters is the best bit of the game (and that also goes for Thief 2), not that the end bits are bad, per se, just not quite the best bits.
Also be sure to check out System Shock 2, 'tis another excellent game (DromEd guru Mike Ryan also worked on this, think he did a bit on Thief 2 but not as much as on Thief 1).

And apparently I'm done with Strange Bedfellows, and around 2/3rds of the way through Into the Maw of Chaos. Strange Bedfellows was loads of fun, except the bug(beast)s, they pissed me off to no end. The lower levels were very cool, and they found a way to make sneaking tough while drenching everything in shadow. The atmosphere was great; lonely and creepy and foreboding. The one thing I hated was the presence of spiders >_< I hunted them all down, each and every one of them, and killed them all.
The Maw is alright so far as well. Despite the very linear feel, it has a lot of cool bits like the 'monster factory' and the ice skating and the reverse waterfall (which, apparently, Pokemon Platinum ripped off).

Are the upper floor areas even accessible in Escape?

Yes, they are blocked by vegetation. I didn't enjoy Strange Bedfellows all that much to be honest, but the Maw, despite its linearity, is a very entertaining mission.

Someone after my own heart then. :)

The second floor is accessible, but not much of it.

And done.
The Maw was fun. Very cool design (especially the ice crystals) and great atmosphere, but the linearity of it felt a little jarring after the previous missions were all so open-ended. The Trickster's model was laughable - I forgive them, it was '98 - but aside from that,
Oh, and bonus: I played through the Blooper Reel mission. My god, it is hilarious XD I think the farting burricks made me laugh the most, especially when one farted on the other and KOed it :'D oh, and the fireworks were pretty cool too. Plus, I got my kid brother (huge basketball fan) to try and dunk through the court in the throne room.
