10/10
After 2 exhausting weeks, I just finished playing a THIEF (specifically Thief GOLD) for the 1st time...not Kidding.
Thanks to STEAM, as I guess a sort of advertisement for the modem THIEF [2014] they released (about a month ago) a sale of Thief Gold, 2, & Deadly Shadows for some ridiculous price...$6.99 if I recall?
Anyhow I never was a stealth player...had no patience for it...as my daughter observed, I go everywhere (including to breakfast) with 'Guns-a-Blazing!'
This ranks as one of the best all-time gaming experiences of my life...its right up there with Doom, Unreal,Quake2,Deus Ex, System Shock2,BioForce...I mean it was that great...you might think I speak only in superlatives with triple exclamations, but I feel that strongly as to how magnificent a game it was.
Downsides?
Not much...except perhaps my running like hell at the end of every level, with no health left, in a mad dash for the exit.
And occasionally puzzles were so hard as be unforgiving, and laid doubt as to if anyone could figure it out without turning to the occasional hint online. (Return to the Cathedral comes to mind...though upon completion that was one of my favorite levels)
Highpoints?
I could go on and on for hours.
I loved the sheer size of the levels...I loved the quietness of it
First, the ambiance was outstanding. I jazzed the game up with the Thief Gold HD Texture Mod and Thief Enhancement Pack 2.0. So I don't know if the look was this wonderful 14 years ago...but it sure looks great now. God bless the folks who created them
The streetlights were so well done; the shadows; the sounds of footsteps drawing near, and then going away.
Visually...one of the highpoints when in (I think it was Undercover?) when you go into the temple. There was a scene there-in somewhere on this huge level, when searching for the 4 talismans; a box comes floating slowly down from the sky.
So simple...so gorgeous.
If I wasn’t so anxious to start Thief The Metal Age I would replay this right now.
In fact, stuck at work on a 24-hour shift today, having finished the games' Maw Of Chaos' late last nite, It’s been tough to concentrate on anything else then getting back to this.
I can't believe this was under my radar for sooo long.
What a game!

Metal Age and a world of fan missions await you.
Look everybody...a noob!
I envy thee. You're just at the beginning of the adventure.

Wow. If you loved Thief Gold this much playing it for the first time in 2014, you have an ocean of fun ahead of you. Literally. There are well over 900 fan missions released, where many of them (especially more recent ones) rival the original missions in quality, and supersede them in beauty. Thief 2 is good, but don't expect the same experience as in TG. It's more hit or miss with some of the levels there. Some extremely good ones, but also some that should've been cut. Check out some of the 'best fan missions' threads for suggestions on where to start.
Good luck and welcome! :D

Welcome to the forum, eric. Thief is very special and it's great when people see that so clearly.

Nope, it kind of looked like ass, but a lot of things did back then. Turn of the century was basically the time of ugly 3D.
Still, art direction > graphics quality, as far as I'm concerned.

I´m also playing Thief Gold for the first time, still without any mods. The old graphics really are ugly (only the lost city looks decent, mainly because of the rather simple textures) Only the polygon models of the enemys looked even worse.
You still got a lot of fun ahead. The metal age and Deadly shadows are both excellent (and they both got a completely different atmosphere, so don´t expect the sequels to be that similar to the experience in Gold)

Hey (supportive) guys!
Having finished Thief GOLD, just entered the Metal Age a few nights ago.
Level I ..Ok...I mean its a 1st level so its not supposed to be great
Level II Shipping and Receiving...way better...still not up to the best of Thief GoLd...finding the ship was a 'moment'
but then came Framed; now THAT's a level!
Beautiful visuals...I can't get enough of those steam punk outdoor lights...the Alien look of the scouting orbs
all the buildings and floors
the ghost in the prison
the vault!
Just a magnificent level.
Master Plan:-
Finish Metal Age
Play Deadly Shadows
try the 9.0 & 9.5 thief gold fan levels
Try the 9.0 & 9.5 Thief Metal age levels
...I might flip it around and try a few fan levels between Metal age & deadly shadows
