I used to use Darkloader but now I've switched to a new machine and had to do a fresh install so I use the built in fmselector as it was one less download
Darkloader is brilliant though and I have huge appreciation for the work the authors have done on it, thanks guys :thumb:

In my spare time, I've developed a means to erase certain aspects of our brain, specifically where memory is stored for gaming. I shall try to erase my memory of Thief and start all over again. Hopefully I'll find you all again, and ask those dumb n00b questions.

Another 3 hours of my life gone...how long before I leave this mortal coil?
1. Courier
Yawn...
One bright shining star though...the dropping of an envelope that needs to be picked up is, to my knowledge, a very uncommon gaming device.
I've seen it in a recent game, Dishonored (which by the way is a strong recommend, in a Deus-ex sort of way)
You don't 100% need it to get into a party [that's in Dishonored) but it makes a stealth level into a random shoot-em-up if you don't?
I wonder if they were inspired by Thief?
Has anyone seen this literary device in Any other PC game?
2. Blood...
double yawn
The insane intelligent monkeys were cute though
3. Life of the PARTY!
Yeaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh; Yee-Hah!
Now that's a level!
Took me a few hours, and a major restart 3/4 thru till I realized that the scripture in the wall safe...was an open-able safe
The alarm was sounding, so as the safe didn't give any visuals of a lock mechanism (which is a little unfair, no?) and I couldn't hear any key turning (let alone see a place for a key) I was basically wandering around forever till I re-found it.
Tremendous level, tons of goals, endless places to explore...and then the proverbial find-your-way-home...which is always way harder than I think it will be when I start.
Just a GREAT level!
...did I mention those guards arguing, then killing each other in the beginning, over the argument of whether a noble women was 'loose'..?...Classic!

Happy to read this. I probably enjoy Trail of Blood more than most. Much better than Courier in my mind. The Party is the best mission in the game hands down. Glad you like the archer fight, it's legendary. That mission has one of the most famous Ghost moves in history, in order to deal with the golden child. Thanks to Sneak ;)

Playing a game for the 1st time is a precious thing; I'm sure I'll play it again (after I come up for air following Gold,MEdal, T2X, and Thief III...but its just so magical seeing it all fresh.
One of the things I forgot to note that I liked before now is the choice of that lisping, effeminate voice for Karras...kind of reminds me of Dr Smith in Lost In Space...just adds a layer of twisted evilness to it.
Another thing I didn't prior mention were the similarities to the Tomb Raider series, especially Tomb 1-3...that old school graphic, those huge levels, and the quality of the cut scenes...I mean the comparison in a good way...and that mood set of having to accomplish so much in one single level...but then knowing the journey must trek onwards, with even more difficulties forthcoming.
Its not that I don't like modern games, but there was this magical something of the late 90s earlier 2000s era that is lost today. I am constantly amazed how much atmosphere is pured into this series.
Precious Cargo Great level...no excuses needed to give it less than an A-...it had a hard act to follow from Party, and I'm not saying its as good...but it sure is damn great.
You know I found the 5th cargo locker key by damn luck before I ever saw the notes signifying its importance...I was just wandering around in that flooded lower level and just bumped into it. At first I felt guilty, thinking I would not have found it using just my intelligence (& I bet I would NOT have!)
But then I though a Thief isn't all about wits...sometimes thieves just get lucky,no?
Kidnap Yet another great one; its been done in other games, rescuing ,then protecting a character, but it was REALLy well done here.
I did get one very Un-Thief like bit of enjoyment, true to my shooter roots.
In that central are, where you can traverse up high a circular area with about 1/2 dozen plus bad guys below, aroung a fire.
First I shot off 2 of them before they figured out where I was...then when they come running up for me,realizing I had saved up a gadzillion mines, I just kept running the track circle above, dropping mines around ever curve, till I heard all but one die behind me...then I used speed to lose the one remaining guy...then I came back to him, snuck up, and killed him with my sword.
Yeah...its not stealth...but it was a blast!

Life of the Party is the favourite level of T2 (or even the whole series) for many people here.
Compared to modern games, what I miss the most are the big sprawling levels. In newer games, you might get a realistic alley or a city corner, but rarely (cough*darksouls1*cough) enough to get a real sense of the place. It feels more like you're moving from a movie set to a movie set. The best that you can hope for is some kind of open world/sandbox game and those rarely go for immersive simulation.

Because of steam sales, I've ended up playing Deadly Shadows first, and have very similar ecstatic feelings about it. I can't wait to get onto Thiief 1 and 2!

Fun fact, if you didn't know already: Karras is voiced by the same actor who voices Garrett. And "Benny" the guard. And the reedy Hammerite voice, and the English-accented civilians from Deadly Shadows, and Raoul, and...

Nice thing about the Archer fight in LOTP that a lot of people don't realise the first time they see it
If you play it again, the archers that won last time don't necessarily win the next time, plus the number of survivors may be different too and that affects how you get past them

In the tail stretch...
Casing the Joint
sucked; dreary, boring, unimaginative...I don't think I've said anything that cold about the game(s) since I started Thief Gold several weeks ago
Masks:
imagine my disappointment when beginning the game to see the location setting being the same
And in its 1st half, I felt as negative about the level as the preceding...
However, I must admit, once I got to the 3rd floor, it improved to decent; I think the whole masque thing very well done; the encouraged usage of vine arrows to get the masks was also cool
The visuals on the entire 3rd floor was nicely done.
However...for both levels, one of my favorite visuals, the lights, defaulted to the Only bland light in the whole game....
Overall, not much of a level
Cut scene to final level...nicely done; very nice
Opening visual of final level, Sabotage, really appealing
Now off to bed, a few days off, and here's hoping I'm stronger (or at least smarter) than Karras
