If you are in a perfect shadow, meaning as dark as you can possibly get, crouching, with no weapon drawn, enemies will bump into you and not say a peep. You can block enemies indefinitely like this. It's not just in this mission, although it might have more perfect shadows than other missions. I never found Caverns to be that difficult. You can sneak through the entire opera house without a single comment (first alert) bar two pieces of loot. Although when using moss arrows, remember that one shot has a pretty large radius. If you learn the size of that radius, you can cut down on the amount of moss arrows needed to cross a tiled room.

I'm not feeling this mission at all. How are you supposed to sneak effectively on loud floors and with so many hallways?
klatremus on 6/11/2014 at 16:36
The best way to sneak across tiled floor (besides using a moss arrow) is press and hold crouch, press and hold creep and then either walk forward [which you can hold continuously without making sound but is slower] or run forward [is a little faster, but here you have to press and hold one second at a time to avoid making noise]. Try it out! After a little practice you'll be a pro.

I'm not sure anymore. It was going well, but now I'm not really interested in Thief 1's brand of slow stealth. The sequence of Haunted Cathedral, Mage Towers, Lost City, and now this level jam-packed with loud floors and hallways has pretty much unsold me on the game.

SNACKS
I FEEL YOUR PAIN...the Mage towers...initially...got to me too; at first, and for awhile, it crossed over from challenging to just annoying.
Its just so huge...there are so many goals to accomplish, and they're spread out far & wide.
But when I came to that floating container slowly coming down from the sky...I was sold; just an exquisitely beautiful moment
Also...a tremendous sense of accomplishment to finishing it.
This may not be the game for you; in fact, appreciating ANy old games per se is a challenge in and of itself; for me, stealth doesn't come easy; in fact, I fight against it whenever I can.
I don't give a white if for the lack of purity...shooting guys from a distance with a broad arrow is fun, watching that death animation and all. I also use the speed potion when needed, although those are rare to get.
I also like the hammer & sword...if the game was not meant to allow ANY combat...then there wouldn't be any combat, no?
Despite the similarity of the Thiefs I played...a newbie like yourself...although I sense if its not for you by now it will never be, I would suggest completing it...and if ANY sparkling of interest remains, I am guessing you you will enjoy Thief 2 (Metal age) more...I have, and I'm, not saying its better, just more enjoyable to me for these 2 reasons..
Even the large levels are not ridiculously large; the allowance for some combat is better; the visuals are more interesting & varied.
You know all of this stuff is an acquired taste; it will never be for everyone.
I love Doom & Hexen...Hexen even more.
There are many, most I would say, who love doom but hate Hexen
I love Pinot Noir...others prefer Merlot...most prefer Merlot
Thief is, without question...Pinot...its got a sharp bite to it...but its too special niche for every palate.
...more babbling to follow in next missive

...as my parents always told me, growing up (in a medieval castle, but with sparse futuristic gear)...Spare the hammer, spoil the child!
On ward thru T2X...and loving it to death (apologies to Alice Cooper)
Let me get this out of the way...its damn fun, damn impressive, and the fact that its a fandom freebie makes it all th ebetter.
Here's some minor, tongue-in-check quibbles:
1. one early level, I think it was the art of deception.
There's a bell...you strike it with a hammer...nothing happens.
This breaks a cardinal rule of PC gaming, even older than if there's a toilet, you must be able to flush it!
If there's a bell...you HAVE to be able to strike it; this isn't even open to debate
2. The Redistribution Game
There's a point where you can go out a window, climb way high along ledges, jump up even higher to a part of a castle you can't enter...all the time seeing the water below
...and there's NO reward for all this?
For finding this area, climbing around ,there SHOULD be a hidden area with some gems at the very least....again, this is a rule of pc gaming
L
3.that train level...where you see the people dancing in the train car...silly, but both beautiful & fun!
4. A question of knowledge...best level so far...so much to do.
I couldn't figure out any way into the cathedral in the beginning other than clunking the guard o his head & stealing a door key.
but it felt like there should be.
on the other side of the cathedral I built then climbed off boxes, roof to slippery to stay on, and no where I could find to shoot a rope arrow to get in via roofs, but I felt there must have been a way?
What did I miss?
This fan mega-mission ROCKS!

11/10 eve
T2X...
2more under the belt.
Both the best levels so far...and I take back my prior commentary as to T2X being easier.
Played Dead Men
Played Deception.
Both long & hard...and in a good way.
In fact, I would say both levels as good as the originals...I take that back, they were better!
High points were the (near) end of Dead men when you had to shoot a rope to the ceiling rafter to climb up and grab the orb, and then jump out the window to find you were actually close to the start
For Deception, the high points were evenly spread out throughout the level, although finding one's way into the basement of the candy store is high on the list...
...but I am tempted to say jumping across the roofs to find one's way back to the actual starting room, which was so hard I had to restart my mission to (re)-find it.
This is a superb fan mission series, just way over the top in quality. As fulfilling a game (at this juncture) as Thief I & II.

I finished First City Bank in a little under an hour. The level is ridiculously huge, and it had the best potential for rope arrow use I've seen so far.
It's pretty silly how Karras made all these recordings praising himself for the robots to play over and over again.

So....
While enjoying the Bee-Jeezus out of T2X...each level getting better& better,
I've been playing the "...of Ill Repute" brothel Level
I think I may have gottne to a point where I have NO choice but to replay the mission, but I'd rather just fix my conundrum. Can I fix it?
Here's why:
1. I know I need the Hall key to complete the level
2. I know I need the office key to get the Hall key
3....and here's the rub...I never grabbed the office key from an innocent heavy women, who in your walkthrough you say "You'll see a large woman carrying on a conversation with a man just off the left. Sneak over behind her and grab the Office Key from her waist before she walks away.."
Well...I didn't. Thats 1 1/2 hours into this level and now I find out this conundrum.
i have no idea where she is; I have no idea if I killed her, let alone where. I cannot find this women anywhere now...she must have waked away looooong ago.
This my question...
1. Does she walk to a certain location & remain there till one gets to her?
2. Does she wander around the level aimlessly, and silently at that..?
3. Does she disapprra, like the keys disappear after usage on this level?
Because if # 2 or 3 then I'll need to restart the level...and if #1 could someone tell me where she walked to?
Thank you for listeing.
Great add-on....other than my reasonable frustration with this point.

Did it.
2 more levels...getting better & better & better
ANd the cut scenes...already a strong point of this project, are just over-the-top in quality.
Reminds me very much of the cut scenes in TR 5 (Chroicles)...not the best tomb raider but tremendous cut scenes.
Of Ill Repute was brilliant.
As it happens, I had killed the fat lady with the office key earlier (that'll teach me!) and the way she fell, her portly body covered 95% of the visible key so I didn't know to take it from her till I saw her one more time from the correct angle.
And then I finished the level.
This ranks with the Life of The Party level in Thief II as one of THE great levels of the series.
