I do not know what you mean when you say "spam the attack key"
What does SPAM mean (in this context?)
It means "click it in no particular order with other keys pressed, as fast as possible".
For example you have mouse left button click for attack and WASD keys for movement. So you normally could press W+click, W+D+click, D+click, D+S+click, etc. So if the sweet spot is under the D direction, you'll unlock the ring after pressing D and the click. But it's easier to just click-click-click as fast as you can and press W, W+D, D, D+S, etc. at the same time because there's no penalty for wrong clicks.

I do not know what you mean when you say "hitting frob "
What does frob mean?
Frob = activate the highlighted object. So the same button or mouse click you use to engage in the lockpicking also disengages it on a second click/press. The progress on the lock is not saved though.

2. In the intro mission to the game it tells one how to wall hug...it obviously isn't a crucial function as I'm at level 4 without once using it, but now I want to try it for fun, and can't see its 'key' listed under the controls.
Can someone remind me which key is wall-hugging?
It's called "Wall-Flatten", it's at the bottom of the controls list. (you can scroll the list by mouse wheel or by dragging the scroll bar)

So....totally stumped at the end of Day 5
I've completed every single goal (including extras, like planting that tap root)..
but for one...
"Visiting the Forbidden Library to hear Caduca read..."
At the completion of each of the prior 3 goals I was transported back to the library...it was so easy...
I never had to 'find' the library entrance...
But now I am NOT transported back to the library..
And I can't find the entrance t all, though I suspect its somewhere in 'Stone Market proper...
is it...?
a hint?
thank you
eric
PS: read walkthrus, but they really don't tell you how to reenter the library, they just begin as if you were already there!

Its in Stonemarket, not the proper
Straight answer: In a dead end past the Terces Courtyard. Look for the glyph or climb through the window above it if you have the gloves.

I must say, for an adaptive Markov chain generator, "eric" seems to be doing surprisingly well.

PS: this Thief I,II,III,IV super-sale of 1-2 months ago is, hands down, the B_E_S_T Steam purchase I ever made!
And to think I hated Stealth before this ?!?!?

Cradle...now THAT was hard.
Took me a zillion tries over 2 weeks to finish.
Totally exhausted...but at least up to Day 8 beginning, finally.
It was quite easy to get lost in Cradle...everything being shades of blues & dark grey.
And it was almost impossible (almost) not to get touched in the age-of-the past...and have to re-do.
Although not my favorite level by a long shot...I DID like the ever-evolving goals.
And I especially liked ending a level by jumping out a window...

Now that's a mission I wish I could replay for the first time! I missed several small things that would have made the level so much more creepier. But I still had some moments that gave me a heart-attack! Like lockpicking a cell door and having a puppet sneak up and get me!:tsktsk: Probably my around favorite mission from TDS. I loved turning the power on, made it more creepier; more light, less shadows (my Garrett has Photophobia!;)), helping Lauryl, getting lost in the memories and like you said,

Definitely one of the best Levels in the series, or even in video games in general (but my favourite level in DS is still the Seaside mansion  ) The buildup is just amazing, no enemies just hearing the wind howl and sneaking through the dark corridors, prepared for everything. And when you get to the attic, that damn scratch on the door, it totally sounded like a new powerful new enemy. I think I ran in the room with a drawn fire arrow and an equipped bottle of holy water (yeah, not very thievy :) )
I totally loved Garrets quote when he gets Lauryls blood. Or stabbing a puppet in the back and realizing that hey doesn´t stay dead for that long  But definitely the best part was the ending, going up via elevator, thinking it´s over and then a puppet tries to reach you through some bars, that actually made me jump out of my seat. And escaping with suicidejump out of the window after flashbombing about 6 shadows at the same time was poor epicness.
Also the plot twist after the mission was really surprising. The only problem I had with this level was the greenish filter in the past segments, I totally got lost.

I redact my comments.
When I said not my favorite level by a long-shot, which objectively is accurate, I did not give full praise as to how much I admired the level.
The twitching-clonic like motions of the inmates, (or whatever you call what was left of them) was truly frightening. Frightening in a way that people with epilepsy were frightening to the ill-informed for centuries considered witches, it must have been so shocking to non-modern societies.
The ghost of Laura was superb. As much as I hate basements in real life (wish I was back in Northern California-No basements!) I sure do love them in games!
My frustrations with the level were 2-fold, and they are completely subjective:-
1. Give me colors! I want scenery. 10 shades of blue-grey is too much for me!
2. being touched scared the bee-jeezus out of me....in fact, once one entered the inner cradle for the 1st time, I felt edge-of-my-seat tense for the entire level(s) till finishing.
Is that praise or condemnation...to each be their judge.
Just finished Day 8 (Museum); loved it! Finishing I felt like John Wayne!
In fact, I found myself down to little health, & no weapons except a dagger about 1/2-way thru Day8...so it was a bear to finish.
Weapon conservation is NOT my strongpoint. It was liking playing Thief I again (via Gold...via Steam)...where for VERY level I was running like a madman without a head in a mad dash to the finish with every level- I felt like Frankenstein with the villagers chasing me with pitchforks!
But....drumroll...I begin Day-9!
Yee-Hah!
