Playing through Thief 2 for the first time, and i'm having a WTF moment - by Lovecraftian
Because it's the demo, it doesn't give the plot away, so there's mention of a "Brother Karras" instead of "Father Karras".
Stephen Russell wasn't told how to pronounce "Truart". It's "troo-ert", but he pronounces it "troo-ART".
The Masked Servants are no longer docile, nor are they servants, but they are Masked Assassins--an idea I believe was revived for TDS as the masked Keeper Assassins.
It also features the male Mechanist Vilnius (instead of female Vilnia) and Sergeant Girk (or "Gerk", however that's supposed to be spelled, voiced by Daniel Thron) instead of the guard Vilnia speaks with (a different voice actor, too).
The ME1030*.wav's are found in the Hammer2 folder, while SG4030*.wav's are found in the Guard1 folder. Transcription as follows:
ME1C0301: "These are strange times indeed, when The Builder's chosen must cater to the folly of the unworthy. Present company excluded, of course, Sergeant Gerk(sp?)."
SG4C0302: "Of course. Personally, I find The City's nobility to be pretentious, pompous, and filled with misconceptions about their own self-worth. But it serves our purposes to stay on their good side, doesn't it Vilnius? I have to admit though...that their presence makes me a bit nervous. You're sure the schematics are safe?"
ME1C0303: "Completely sure, Friend Gerk(sp?). They rest securely in the central office (play 'New Objective' sound). There's a faithful brother at the door, and I carry the only key. Besides, the bretheren long to put steel to flesh, for they've not tasted righteous battle in far too long. They will guard our common interests with their lives, if need be."
SG4C0304: "Good. You put me at ease. Maybe I'll relax my guard a bit and partake of some of your wine."
ME1C0305: "An excellent idea, Friend Gerk(sp?). The Builder's nectar is the finest our Order has to offer. Now if you'll excuse me, I must attend to our guests...."
There's the goofy LGS guys bein' nutty, not heard in-game, but found in the folders:
sg3c0101: "I long for the days when we had pizza for the staff meetings."
sg2c0102: "What? Those pies had enough grease to drop a Burrick!"
sg3c0103: "You softbelly! I'm surprised you're in this job. 'Oh that grease is hurting my poor tummy.'"
sg2c0104: "Shut up you taffer!"
sg3c0105: "Well, I better get on my patrol on the first floor."
sg2c0106: "I better go on my patrol before Captain [Steve] Pearsall catches me slackin' off."
sg3c0107: "Oh my god! They killed the sherrif!"
sg2c0108: "You bastard!"
sg3c0109: (Singing, badly on purpose, but with gusto) "I shot the sheriff, but I didn't shoot the deputy." (Vocal mimicry of high-note on guitar with vibrato).
sg2c0110: "No he's really dead!"
sg3c0111: "OK, we better go downstairs and find him before he hides in the shadows. Then we won't be able to find him at all."
If these *.wav's are copied into the corresponding TDP/Gold folders, replacing the originals, you can see/hear this outside Bafford's:

He is harmless, there have been threads about ghosting him, trying to get around him undetected.
Wait, can't you just use an Invisibility Potion? That's what I did just two days ago, and there's one available in that level.
jtr7 on 30/8/2007 at 02:44
Would it last long enough to get past without running?
Cliftor on 30/8/2007 at 02:55
I ran, yeah, but it didn't raise his alarm. I think he made a "suspicious" sound (hard to tell), but he didn't become alert or search. That counts as Ghosting, right?
I though in Ghosting you're even allowed to let them become alert (searching), just not fully aware of you.

Using an invisibility potion would be considered "chemical success" and is generally frowned upon if I'm not mistaken.

Ah, yes. The Thief 2 demo is excellent and in many ways superior to Life of the Party. I wonder why they changed it so much?

To tie it in to the real story.

Welcome to TTLG, taffer!
If you like Life of the Party, be sure to dig up the original Thief II demo mission, "The Unwelcome Guest". It is both similar and very different from LotP - it uses a modified version of the same "rooftop" map, except much larger, and arranged differently. The tower is very different also.
Many fans actually like it more than the LotP mission. In any case, it is a great mission, and will feel familiar yet completely different from LotP.
I think but am not certain that the following is a good link to it:
(
http://thiefmissions.com/demos/thiefdemo2.zip) http://thiefmissions.com/demos/thiefdemo2.zip (54MB).
The site in the link is (
http://thiefmissions.com/) thiefmissions.com: Cheap Thief Missions, an excellent though dormant fan mission download site.

Thanks for digging that up for me. I'll be sure to download it tonight! :)
