No other single form of entertainment has its claws so deeply embedded in our education system. Until you guys grasp the implications of that, you still don't understand and are not responding to the OP.
Hardly the sports fault for Americans having a shitty education system. Sports is probably the best way for youngsters, who aren't so bright to actually get somewhere in studies over there, which says a lot.

That's a big thing in the US but its not a big issue in Europe. In any case - is it the fault of pro-sports or the fault of those in education?

Both. I get the feeling that a lot of US educators are more than happy to take advantage of the sports fanatics. It brings in a lot of money, and they can ride on the coat-tails of the team's glory.
The real losers are the students who actually want to learn. Unfortunately there's a lot of US universities that are basically "football teams with a college attached". It wasn't that long ago that a major US university proved that they value the success of their football team more than they value the well being of children.

Calling it football* to begin with, like the rest of the World, is a good start.
In English speaking countries, one calls it football, 2 call it soccer, and everyone else uses both.

Edit: The punchline being that soccer is also used in Aus, NZ, South Africa, Ireland, Japan, and a lot of SE Asia.

I know the term and it's genesis but I didn't know it was also an Australian thing.
The recent matches have been very disappointing. Nigeria and Ghana were awful. And England are rubbish.

The term soccer comes from the UK. Short for association football.
The bigger question is why the US sport football is called football, given how incidental the use of feet are.
