Maybe we should all go with Sepak Bola.

The term soccer comes from the UK. Short for association football.
Which just amuses me because it dovetails perfectly with the UK tendency to infantilize words. I'm surprised they didn't call it "soccy."
Regarding (US) football, it's because it descends from rugby which is still a form of association football.

Could have happened I suppose, but the Aussies are worse than us for that.

It's not a UK tendency, it's a subset, in this case public school boys. Same people who refer to rugby as 'rugger'.
But yes, it's stupid.

well, in Aus ppl call football "footy". so Sub has it right.
we also call sex "sexy"
get it?

I've found it to be much more widespread than just public school boys. It's the trendy tossers you get hanging around Clapham Junction, the preeners in Blackhealth, the young professional set up in the nice bits of Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester (such as they are). I still wouldn't say it's a UK tendency but there is enough of it about.
Pig, I was thinking of things like barbie and rellies and dunny.
Afrikaners do it a little too with chommie and bakkie, but the rest of the slang is awesomely expressive and not just a little bit rough and in your face.

A while back I was learning to speak Polish. I heard from a few Poles that Czech sounds almost infantile. Like, 'fish' is 'ryba' and 'fishy' is 'rybka', and the latter is the normal form for a bunch of Czech nouns. Then I talk to Czechs and they think that Poles sound brutish.
This is all culturally closed off to me, so take it with a grain of salt. Slavic languages always fascinated me for some reason.

Subj you are totally right as I said, relatives = "rellies" etc

Unless I missed it, I didn't see anyone mention the crippling brain damage football players are often left with at the end of their careers. Sure, they're paid a lot while they're doing it, but then they're left with no income and serious brain damage... they may get paid a lot, but football is essentially a form of physical abuse. It's an inhumane sport.
Now, I generally agree with a lot of the anti-sports sentiments in this thread, but I can't help but feel the irony of their statement on a video game forum... isn't it better for people to go outside, move their bodies and actually interact with other people than to sit in one place staring a screen in solitude all day? Big sports is evil for sure, but it's silly to say all sports are evil if you're going to turn around and say video games are good. And both are based on violence and competitiveness, so I don't think you can argue that video games instill better social values. I don't even play or follow any sports and I play plenty of video games, but I can still see the absurdity of this argument.

I don't see the irony. Sitting in one place, staring at a screen all day is what sports fans do.
