This was a while ago wasn't it? I think it's a real shame because there are still a load of really good games for it. Hopefully the PS4 streaming service (or DL service!) will allow them to live on. I never owned one but I'm aware of the game selection and I have some PSN HD overhauls for PS3.

Chief, that is like, old news. Now if you excuse me I have scheduled sex with my ps2 to have now.

It's from last month. If you call that old, then fine. My point was that it was just that recent, and it slipped me by. I basically just wanted to hear some old stories about that system.

The PS2: my first console, and bought at a time when the PS3 was either close to launch or had just been launched. And my main reason? Wanting to write a paper about storytelling and agency in games and thinking that ICO and Shadow of the Colossus would make for great source material.
I never regretted getting the PS2. Great selection of games, sometimes in genres that you just don't get all that often on the PC. Okami, for instance, is as magical as anything I've played on a computer, and the same's true for Team ICO's games. But yes, it was a gateway drug to harder stuff, namely the PS3. (Well, that was mainly because I wanted something that could play Criterion Blu-rays, and if I was going to get an import Blu-ray player, why not make it a PS3?)

Games stopped being made for the PS2 long before Sony ever stopped making the PS2.
Actually the real shame here is that PS3s aren't generally backwards compatible, except through PSN. PS1 games got a hell of an extended life through BC (hell, even my PSP and PSV can play PS1 games!) but PS2 BC was limited to certain early models. So a lot of really good games are going to get shut out, especially since the PS4 has no BC whatsoever.
The PS2 I think was the clear winner of its generation, and the XBox1 the clear loser. Any game worth playing was on the PC or the PS2, so the XBox was almost totally superfluous. Even Halo 1 and 2 had PC versions.
Personally I love my PS2. I sometimes get into arguments over PS2 vs Dreamcast but you know what? Fuck Dreamcast. Sega got out of the hardware business because the Dreamcast was a shoddily-made piece of shit. I had two that broke within months. My PS2 took 10 years for it to start acting up on me. Great fucking system, great selection -- I'd argue it's probably the best system since the SNES.

Err, you mean PS3 was limited on BC, right? Do all PS2s have PS1 BC?

There's a PS2 game coming out in Japan later this month. An expansion for Final Fantasy XI apparently. Not to mention they were still, at the very least, releasing sports games for the PS2 as recently as a year ago.
Edit: According to wikipedia, the last PS2 game was Pro Evolution Soccer 2013, which came out in November.

Yes. That was a major selling point. Go easy on it though -- extended use wears the laser mechanism down, though it takes years to happen. Video DVDs too.

Ah the ps2. One of the best consoles ever. The console I spent the most money for games for. So many good games of all kinds. Far superior console (games library wise) to the ps3.
