I dunno, FF12 was pretty cool and I hear good things about 13.

12 was the one that starts out in Ivalice, like the FFT games, right? I heard it starts out decently enough, but gets boring a few hours in.
FF13? I hear it's almost worse than 10 in a lot of ways.

Yeah, deth, I dunno where you're hearing good things, but I hear it is a linear piece of shit that takes a massive step back from the previous titles.
And yeah, FFX was on of the games I got with my first PS2. Coming from the blurry, textured-warped PS1 games like Silent Hill, it was gorgeous.

I mostly hear good things from people who aren't generally Final Fantasy fans.

... the racing was
the worst part of Mafia what the
hell, even people who
like the game hate that part
Mafia was awesome, and the race was (and is) one of the best parts in the game. I sucked at it to start with and was initially frustrated, but then I simply took time to think about
when and
why I was being overtaken, and started taking proper notice of the car's abilities and the layout of the track. The race isn't hard (honestly); you just have to take into account that the driving physics in Mafia (throughout the game) were unusually detailed, and so treat it like an actual race.
After I'd beaten it the first time by a fairly narrow margin, I reloaded the game to try it again using only the cockpit view and, despite making mistakes along the way, I won it
easily (I'm sure I had something like a ten second lead). Observation and logic for the literal win.
Later on they patched the game to make the race easier, although I think you can still choose to play it at the original difficulty?
I was really disappointed that there weren't more races in Mafia, so it kinda sucks to learn that the PS2 got them and they were never added to the PC game.

I like you better when you ramble on about indie gimmick games. Mafia wasn't the worst game I played last year (it was just tolerable enough to push through to the end) but that fucking race, oh my god. The only thing worse was... well, any part that involved shooting.

If I'm gonna play a JRPG, it won't be any of the post FFX games. Nope. It'll be one of the Dragon Quests. They're still cool.
The Dragon Quests are MMOs now. MMOs aren't cool in the slightest, especially ones made by Asians, since they tend to be endless grindfests.
If you wanna play good contemporary JRPGs, there's the Shin Megami Tensei series.

Or the Souls series (Dark and Demon Souls). Though those are DEFINITELY not standard JRPG's.

The whole steal the car/return the car/race sequence was brilliant, even before the "let's tone down the difficulty because people suck at life" patch.

Actually, there was one genuinely horrible thing about that race, which was that it made you sit through the pre-race cutscene every single time you attempted it. That got old fast, and was pretty inexcusable. Hopefully they patched that problem out.
