Right, I've heard many good things about Call of Cthulhu DCotE and as I played Penumbra trilogy recently, it has revived my interest in harsh survival horrors.
DCotE seems to be a worthy example of it's genre. It's quite visually obsolete these days, but the atmosphere (especially created by sound) is well done. Sneaking is well implemented and the level design almost reminds me Thief.
However I have read the game is known for it's share of bugs, of which few are quite fatal and you can't proceed in the game if you hit them.
I'm not sure, but I think I have just hit one of them :
I'm nearly the beginning of the game in the church catacombs. I have to open a safe containing a stone key to proceed. I have placed the post card on the stone tablet, so I know the code for the safe should be 3 - 1 - 5 - 7.
Two walkthroughs confirmed me that I have to start turning the dial on the safe clockwise to 3, counter-clockwise to 1, cw to 5 and back ccw to 7 (that would require to turn the dial past zero). I have done this precisely for I don't know how many times and the safe doesn't open!
I don't know if I'm missing something, or my changed keyboard controls betray me (I tried it with default arrow keys to no effect) or where is the problem. Is it one of those fatal bugs? Because I found no mention of such bug on the net, if I was indeed searching carefully.
Folks, whoever played this game, did you hit this problem too or what are your thoughts and suggestions?

I replayed it like 3-4 times and never had any fatal bugs.
Did you try to start counter-clockwise, just to be sure? Also, are you sure 3 - 1 - 5 - 7 is the correct code? I just don't remember is it correct or not, but I remember that it was quite hard to figure out what the code was, it wasn't obvious.

Jesus Mary Joseph, I was breaking my head over this... gotta try that this evening.
Yes 242, I'm positive the code should be right, the holes in the post card made it obvious once you place the card on the stone tablet with carved numbers. And like I said, two walkthroughs are in accord that the numbers 3-1-5-7 should be dialed cw, ccw, cw, ccw.
Thanks guys, I'll let you know.

Also helpful, is a fan patch that allows almost endless amounts of cheating tweaking. I don't remember where I got it (google may help, it is simply called DCoTEPatch) or, I could send it to you. Really helped on a tough part, as I needed to turn on God mode for about 3 minutes.

I have it, thanks, hopefully I won't have to use it.
Now I get the essence of my problem - I was pushing LEFT for CCW and RIGHT for CW directions, but they always turn the safe dials in the opposite direction, so the walkthroughs were basically correct when they stated that the DIAL has to be turned cw/ccw. Chronical brainfart on my side.

That was actually one of the few places in the game I breezed through. I had trouble later on almost constantly.

I've been thinking about replaying this game. I never finished my first runthrough despite really liking it. I found the last few levels were ridiculously hard so I never found out what happens at the end.
It's been a couple of years though so it may be time to give it another shot. I didn't realize there was some type of god code for it. I just may use that at the end, even though I've never used any kind of cheats before.

Well, let us know if you want the fan-patch.

The only fan patch that I know of only makes the game easier, it doesn't fix any bugs AFAIK.
