I already had the feeling that I should explain that a bit more: A dagger still is an easily-hidden useful tool, not cumbersome and if I'm not to kill anyone, it is better than a sword which is only luggage at that point. But a sword most usually is a killing weapon because my opponent won't give up if I give him a slap on his arm... which would be a difficult thing to do anyway. He will try to kill me, he will be armed and armoured, he will not have any mercy once he sees that I have a sword myself and that makes it nearly impossible to avoid him without taking him out consequently. Of course a dagger would be less practical in this situation but here you are on the "killing route" anyway. If not, you run, and you run as soon as you smell the immediate danger and not draw your sword first hoping you can disable him politely.
@light/hevay swords: Ah, I see, I was already a hundred years ahead; of course those first "hybrid" forms were quite impractical, I just wonder whether they were still designed for different military contexts (heavy "crashing down" cavalry weapon vs. infantry weapon etc.) and (mis) used afterwards. People usually don't hold fast to inefficiency if it's about life or death.

I voted for them. They're arguably the most important weapon in there, along with the blackjack.
And flash bombs.
If you're ghosting Water is the only important one. If I could choose one only for the whole mission, I'd choose water (I mean, for most missions).

You're ignoring two things; swords can be used to block incoming blows and situations in which that is the only option for survival do happen.
Even though I've expounded (probably too much) and taken great pains to address relevant criticisms, my argument is very simple.

True, but in the confines of a computer game, there would likely be no circumstances in which you would get to use said useful tool (unless, as Ironpants said, you want to be able to eat with it) so there would be no point in giving it to the player in the first place, unless you wanted them to be killing people with it.
I suppose your point is that Garrett would probably have a knife/dagger anyway, so it would be more of a makeshift 'I need something to kill someone, I'll use this handy wrench/chainsaw/crowbar/dagger that I've got lying around anyway', rather than Garrett explicitly carrying a sword for self-defence. I still disagree, though, since the sword would still be useful for Garrett when faced with monsters, or as a last resort when cornered by guards where killing is the only feasible option for escape.

Isn't this what happens in T1 and 2? I haven't played them for a long time but I remember that water arrows are used up if you create holy-water arrows. I like this idea, yes, but lets try not mention BS in relation to Thief please.
you are correct with the holy water, but only for 30 seconds - does holy water expire? what if you had to sacrifice a broadhead to make a fire arrow with your fire crystal? or you could keep the crystal to use as a flare, or put the crystal in a mine to make a bigger boom? I suppose you'd need a System Shock-like inventory, that would allow you to combine items, but it would give a greater sense of "scraping by with what I can make" (and bring home the need to conserve resources) than the wealth of supplies available in T1&2.

The results don't make sense. 87 people voted and yet not everyone voted for the balckjack and rope arrows!
WHO ARE THE DISSENTERS
I'm one. :o
I only voted for blackjack and moss arrows because they're the only tools I wouldn't want to go without. It doesn't mean that I have a phobia of rope though. I'd like rope arrows to return in
Thief 4.
SubJeff on 17/5/2009 at 04:11
So why didn't you vote for them?
Neb on 17/5/2009 at 04:27
Because moss arrows and the blackjack are my only "must haves."

In T4 I'd like to see again rope arrows, sword, swimmable water and therefore breath potions. T3 is only good for its graphics, but in other aspects I wish T4 were similar to T1/T2.
