There's a sense of empowerment in any successfully timed series of quick actions, the same reason why Super Meat Boy is universally praised although it's quite punishing. I can honestly say I missed that feeling of rush that a few test chambers offered in the first game - all they had to do was put one or two of those and it'd have been perfect. I read coop has it, but I haven't played it yet.
When it comes to humour, I'm still unsure whether the best choice was to make the game openly comedic from the beginning. I know it's not obvious how they could have managed to pull off again the incidental and unexpected progression of humour of the first game, but I still have the feeling they tried hard to make room for stand-up comedy when it wasn't needed.
The first third of the game is very talkative, I found myself often near the elevator at the end of a test, waiting idly for the monologue to stop. Okay, it's almost always funny but as funny as something can get, it's never good when all you do is wait for the punchline. I discovered later that the engine was even designed to keep you travelling inside the elevator as long as someone is still talking.
It's a bit sad for me to say this, as I really think the writing was good and clever, but reaching quiet old aperture was almost a relief after all that frenzy.

One issue I have with it is that the redesigned aperture is simply TOO out there to make any sense. Whereas in the first game the facility seemed somewhat within the line of reason(there were static observation and maintenance areas near the test chambers), the cavernous facility which stretches for miles in each direction was hard to take seriously. In fact, it was so ridiculous as render my attempted suspension of disbelief futile.

Someone with suspension of disbelief smaller than mine? The world is doomed.

Aperture was basically put into suspension when Glados was shut down so unless the few active personality cores did some serious work between Portal 1 and 2, the facility we see in Portal 2 is what it looked like in the early 2000s.
It's the only thing that truly bugs me about Portal 2. Dozens of miles of space filled with hundreds of reconfigurable test chambers and that's not even counting
the unbelievably huge test spheres in the sealed section. Seriously, wasn't Aperture going bankrupt in the late 70s/80s? Where'd all the money come from?
