No to both sentences. ARGs...ugh. I just hate everything about them.
I don't see how you can disagree with the first sentence. Regardless of your thoughts on them, I think it's difficult to deny that they're powerful forms of marketing.

March 11th? I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but that's the day of the Game Developer Choice Awards. (
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/valves-newell-honored-with-2010-game-developers-choice-pioneer-award-81697822.html) Newell's going to be getting an award for pioneering in the game industry. I'm actually attending the ceremony, so if something happens, I'll be sure to report in. It's also the first day the expo floor opens at the Game Developer's Conference. Valve doesn't usually have a booth on the expo floor though (they do have one at the Job Fair), so I'm not expecting much to happen there.
And I can't really blame you, ZB. If all I'd ever seen was infomercials, I'd think television was nothing but marketing, too.
An interesting non-marketing ARG is (
http://www.urgentevoke.com/) Evoke, an ARG designed to get people to connect with young people in Africa "to come up with creative solutions to our most urgent social problems." It just started on Wednesday, so there's no telling how successful it's going to be, but it's an intriguing concept that I intend to follow along with.

Hey Ton, if you happen to catch Epic's presentation on the UDK, you might see some of my work. :thumb:

ZB gained a pile of points for linking that video.

Hey, those Twinkies don't buy themselves.

the entire point of videogames is to NOT get out and do stuff in the big blue room.
Well duh, videogames shouldn't do that, that's what ARGs are for.

Way I see it, ARGs are something you ignore, watch, or get involved in. They are not something you spend any amount of time raging about, because ARGs are not impeding on your life in any way. In the case of the Portal 2 ARG, instead of throwing a bitchfit why not just shut up, sit back, eat Twinkies or whatever and wait to see what comes of it?
But ZB getting angry over something dumb is his way of letting us know he's in good health and doesn't have cancer or anything.

So it's been announced that Portal 2 will be "full retail price." I'm pretty skeptical about their ability to produce 15 hours of absolutely brilliant, original gameplay or 20-25 of "very good" gameplay, which I consider the minimum for $50-$60. But I'm willing to give them a shot!

Clearly they didn't want me buying the game on release. No episode 3 news doesn't help them.
SubJeff on 6/3/2010 at 00:23
So if it had "episode 3 coming soon" on the box youd been more inclined to buy it?
