They changed the ending.
First time I have ever known of a game company to release a patch to change the ending of their game in anticipation of an announcement of the sequel.
(they didn't change it very much)

Dammit why do I always miss this kind of fun stuff. I always feel like such a tard when everybody else goes and finds all the clues.
I haven't had portal installed for over a year so I didn't even know it updated.

It's got to be the first time an existing game has been patched in this way. It's not really been possible until Steam anyways, as there was no real way to guarantee that people would update.

Considering that a Google search for
portal "new level" yields zero references to the game on the first page of results (whereas a search for
portal "new ending" yields nothing but Portal hits on the first page), I'm thinking no, and wondering where you even heard such a rumor.

No new level for the moment, just a new achievement, a slightly revised ending and a progress bar which ends tomorrow around 7:15 AM PST.
