Sure, I understand that it's really just an expansion pack.
It's NOT an "expansion pack." An expansion pack would be something like Blue Shift- using HL1 resources to be an entirely self-contained story and game. The Episodes are meant to be all one game. In fact, I have a theory that when they're all out, Valve will combine them.

My point was that bundling it with some multiplayer and an incredibly short mini-game doesn't justify what they're charging for the orange box.
That "some" multiplayer is not only one of the most highly anticipated games of the decade, but it's actually really fucking good. But then again, you wouldn't know, because-

In regards to my comment about TF2, I haven't played it so maybe I'm wrong, but from what I've read, the most praised aspects of it are the graphics style and the taunting and animation and sound and whatnot which is great at first, but not when you've seen it all a hundred times before. This makes me doubt it'll have the long lasting appeal of counter-strike or enemy territory.
Are you retarded or something? Play the game for a few days. Trust me- the gameplay is nearly perfect (I have only a few minor quibbles.) They took an utterly un-fun game (Team Fortress Classic) and turned it into one of the best, most satisfying MP games I've ever played.

The game is undeniably extremely short, there are very few textures and they are pretty basic, the levels are extremely boxy, reminiscent of SS1, which may have been great in 1994 but today is pretty subpar.
You're bitching about a game set almost entirely in training rooms because it has squarish design and only has about 30 textures or so? Seriously? That's not a joke? You seriously think making the game look better (to you) would improve it in gameplay? Okay, well why don't I go outside and fucking stick a Type R sticker on my car, that should make it go faster!

I think complaining that The Orange Box is not worth its price or not very good value is probably one of the more insane things one can say.
Ok, even granting that some people have played HL2 and Episode 1 already, Episode 2 took me about 7 hours or so, loads included, according to Steam, Portal was a couple of hours first time through, though I immediately wanted to replay it, so add on another hour there, and I've dropped about 10 or so hours in TF2 and have no tired of it. So that's 20 hours of gameplay. Bioshock took me like 14, so The Orange Box beats that one, simply on new content.
But avast! I HADN'T played HL2 or Episode 1, my buddy who got TOB for the 360 hadn't either. This catapulted the value of it to insane levels. The cost per hour of entertainment for this product worked out to be about a dollar thirty five. The only other medium that offers that kind of value is books.
This is all just looking at pure cost per hour. It should be noted that the actual quality of those hours was fantastic. Portal may have been short, but I would easily have payed the $24 that it costs seperately, it was just complete quality. Also, you complain that it is both short, and there is not much diversity of setting? That doesn't really make much sense. If it only took you like an hour how could you have gotten that tired of the setting, most "full" games have the same setting for about an hour of play time. If anything the size is working to its favour, given its limited scope.
Also, if you're choked about the price of The Orange Box when all you wanted was Episode 2 why didn't you just buy it seperately through Steam? It's like thirty bucks, which seems pretty par for the course regarding expansion packs, and seems like a pretty fair value for Episode 2.

I must have logged in at least a hundred hours on TF2 alone. For a while, I was fairly addicted to it, too.
So who wants to help me get my (

Arguing if the Orange Box is cost effective now? So you didn't play HL2 and EP1. Well good for you, most people, and certainly most potential buyers of OB, already did. Calculate it now and try the WCC not to block your view too much.

Pffft, a hundred hours? That's like 2 weeks for me. I'm almost 100% certain I've played it as long as Morrowind/Oblivion combined. :)
BTW, since you're not on Steam right now, if you see a server running CP_TOYFORT join it. Trust me on this one, it gave me a Little Big World flashback.

Well I do have a life. ;p
Toyfort, huh? Sounds like another Rats style map. I'll check it out.

i was more than just a little pissed off that i couldn't buy the black box. i gave my "gifts" to a friend (who believe it or not hadn't bought half life 2, wanted to play half life 2, could run half life 2 and didn't want to pay for the orange box... small world)
But still i feel ripped of + where the hell is css? the one game i really wanted to give my friend...

I thought Portal and the Eps were good games but I wouldn't call them great.
Portal was a neat idea but there wasn't enough content to call it a real game.
The Eps were more of the same as HL2, which was basically Doom in brighter environments. Kind of disappointing really. I had a lot more fun playing Doom 3.

CSS isn't that great, to be honest. It's mostly just zombie mod and dust2 these days.

I agree wholeheartedly. The vivid and expansive environments of the Half-Life 2 games can't match the visceral thrill of the long sequence of monster closets and two living characters encountered in Doom 3. Additionally, 3 is clearly a higher number than 2, which is another place where Valve went wrong.
A point of extreme consternation for me is that Valve ripped off Doom 3's level design even though Half-Life 2 began development first, and despite the fact that the games are nothing alike. On the other hand, I have to applaud id software for ensuring that they didn't copy Valve - intentionally or otherwise - by making their game any fun at all to play.
