That bad, huh? A lot of people said Q4 sucked, but I kinda enjoyed it anyhow. Or at least bits of it.
Doom 3 have any redeeming qualities or should I continue to ignore it?
Doom 3 has a neat PDA system. Too bad it was ninety times better in SS2.

Doom 3 was actually very good at what it set out to do. It was it's aim that was low, but in being a dark, jumpy twitch shooter with a generic a to b to c plot and progressive enemy + weapon upgrades it's solid. And the engine is great.

I think there are limits to the "It did what it set out to do" defense. Something can set out to be a boring, generic, utterly repetitive shooter with the aesthetic appeal of a 16-year old gamer's doodles and succeed. Doesn't make it anything else than a boring, generic, utterly repetitive shooter with the aesthetic appeal of a 16-year old gamer's doodles.

Yeah, but I only got it for The Dark Mod and only played it because I thought if I pay I may as well play. I'm not saying it's standards are low, I'm saying it's gameplay objectives are relatively unsophisticated. Compare it to Far Cry, another shooter of the era, and you'll see how limited the gameplay it.
What I'm saying is that despite this it's actually a good game IF you're the type of person who would like that sort of thing. Which I never realised I was until late into the game.

Portal was worth the 2 times I played it. The remixed maps with harder objectives are okay. But it's not worth playing more than twice, I enjoyed the atmosphere and the puzzles just fine the first time, and 2nd time I listened to the commentary (doesn't cancel out the ingame audio when playing, such an obvious thing was overlooked). The commentary was so-so. Valve's designs are too controlled for my liking.
BTW HL2 episodes are indeed glorified expansion packs. I still remember the whining Sin got for having only 3 weapons. Well duh, cus it's an episode. Unlike real standalone episodic games, HL2's benefited tremendously from the base game assets.

What the Hell ever happened to SiN episodes?

Sin: Emergence didn't sell and I think the company that made it is now making kids games or something like that.

Doom III is a great game. It's scary, pretty, challenging and reminds one of SS2. Its appreciation is best done privately however, as it marks you as a Neanderthal among the gaming intelligentsia (who've never played it).

It sold very well, still has one of the best engines out there and got pretty good reviews and yet for some reason most people at TTLG hate it.

How's the expansion? I periodically see it around, but never got around to picking it up. I enjoyed the hell out of the game itself.
