Don't they own SS franchise too, now? :p
van HellSing on 20/9/2007 at 21:26
They do, but I think the C&CX bit says everything.

I'm still left with a few questions.
-Tiberium universe(GDI, Nod, Scrin), or Red Alert universe(Americans and Soviets, I think)? (I don't know much about either, though I'm slightly more familiar with Tiberium.)
-How much FPS and how much RTS will there be? Is it just going to be C&C Renegade with touched-up graphics, or will there be commanders playing it out like a typical session of C&C while actual players control the individual units on the battlefield?
-Will there be tons of FMV? (Wasn't present in Renegade in a substantial form, but I think the main RTS series had FMV for mission briefings-even C&C3.)

Red Alert actually belongs to the Tiberian universe as a prequel, while RA2 is a spinoff. Though Westwood did want to consolidate it into the Tiberian universe at one point, with, you guessed it, Renegade 2. Sadly the project was abandoned. You can still see some of the preliminary work (including a gameplay vid even) here: (

I don't know EA's plans for this game, what I do know is that some months ago there was a rumour that EA was going to make a C&C FPS on the Crysis engine.

New stuff.
Watch this demo reel:

Three minutes five seconds in, a C&C themed scene starts, which looks like a proof-of-concept piece for a C&C action game. The thing is legitimate, as in it was actually done for EA:

I dunno honestly, there's a couple Crytek-sponsored C&C mods for Crysis in the pipeline. They'll probably be better than anything EA could develop, provided that they're ever finished.
Officials from Electronic Arts have confirmed that the company is developing a squad based first person shoot ‘em-up style game set in the Command & Conquer universe. Named Tiberium, the game is due to be released next autumn on PS3, 360 and PC

Chris Plummer, executive producer at EA Los Angeles, said: “After two years of pre-production, it is exciting to finally reveal this game and its rich fiction to the world. We’ve put a lot of effort into evolving the tactical shooter experience by taking core gameplay compulsions like commanding, choice and dominating your enemies and delivering them in first-person.”
Mike Verdu, vice president and general manager at EA Los Angeles added, “EALA has a long history of developing groundbreaking real-time strategy games with the Command & Conquer series. This is the birth of a new franchise - we couldn’t be more excited.”(

In response to you remark:
C&C does have a rich fiction behind it, which many people seem to enjoy, and for some reason mods' additions don't really count.
But it is nice to hear that EA allows mods based on their IP competing with their own games. Even if the Crysis mods lead to better sales of Crysis, I doubt it'll benefit them overall.
Fiction aside, gameplay and overall quality is important. I'm sure you're aware of EA's reputation.
-Generally inferior quality games.
-Release the same sports games each year with little change, but with maybe a few bugfixes, a new play roster and some minor new features.
-Poor quality standards. Look at the state of the Battlefields:- long unresolved balance issues, lack of native widescreen support, bugs that get ignored even after multiple patches.

I am aware of EA reputation, so are they. For years they focussed on making money instead of games. In 2006, they announced they'd focus more on developing new IP. Most likely from a monetary point of view -you can only rehash the same game so often-, but still.
Yes, their track record is dreadful.
They were the first to figure out the market for yearly editions of sports games (a type of game that I don't get in the first place let alone that I'd purchase a new iteration each year). Power to them. I don't care about FIFA. Still takes up shelf space that could be used for good instead of evil.
They were also the first to figure out that developers are artists and should be treated that way. Which sounds great. But 20 years later they acquire Bullfrog which effectively dies, then they acquire Westwood which gets split up. Makes you wonder how they got from A to B.
This makes it really easy to condemn EA as evil.
But all this, nasty as it is, does not mean that all their games suck.
System Shock 2 was published by them.
NFS Most Wanted is a personal favorite of mine.
The Sims: loved by many.
MoH series: loved by many.
And recently they actually seem to make good on their pronounced intention to rehash less and innovate more.
Skate is lauded by all who play it.
NFS Pro Street is serious attempt at branching the NFS titles into a new direction (I don't like it, I like cop car chases, still: no rehash)
And now they attempt a new squad shooter, based on the C&C universe.
Sure it might suck, then again it might not.
But at least it's not a rehash.
The worst thing we can do is boycott/dismiss their good games because we don't like their shit games. It screws up their sales figures in the wrong direction.
