Is it possible to hide the lightgem in any of those games, for screenshots?

Photochop it out.

In T3UI.INI, change:
[LightGem]
Active=VISIBLE
to
Active=NOT
Do the same for [CompassWindow]. The size and placement of these items can also be altered; see the (

To hide the lightgem & health shields in Thief 1 & 2, open dark.cfg (which is in the installation folder for each game) and find the lines:
vismeter_zoom 60 ; zoom vis meter in
hpbar_zoom 60 ; zoom hp bar in
For each of them, change the 60 to -60
Of course other numbers will work too, but -60 helps you remember the default.
It might be quite interesting to play the games like this...

Good heavens, why go to the trouble? As BA said, just crop the bottom off.

Wow, awesome idea. I might just have to...

But that way you get a distorted field of view, and lose the ability to scale a screenshot to exactly 50% of its original size while preserving consistent screenshot dimensions for your website (unless you're careful to crop to the same size each time).
That said I don't bother hiding the HUD either, I tend to just set the screen size to 1280x1024, scale the resulting screenshot down to 640x512, then crop off the lightgem stuff at the bottom to make it 640x480.
