Thanks everyone, I'll put in a bigger response when I have a chance.
Based on what people have said here, and what I've seen online, I'm leaning towards the possibility of living half an hour or so away from San Fransisco and catching the train in. This option appears to give us the best chance of finding a good public school for Amaya.
The living wage calculator is a fantastic way of comparing relative living costs, so thank you Aerothorn. I have to admit, though, that after comparing various rental properties with the price suggested via the living calculator, I think that Christy and I might be a little too spoilt to live within their budget! :o
I'm also using the (
http://www.greatschools.org/) Great Schools site to get an idea of what the public education is like in the various areas.
Heywood, thanks for the detailed response. I'll definately PM you soon. I would be employed directly by the US employer. Based on what everyone has said here, and a bit of research, I'd probably commute in on the BART or Caltrain.
Scots, sorry mate, I'm just sick of you and Shug scoring all the good men.
Seriously, I'm not making a concerted effort to leave Brisbane. We've just decided that if a good opportunity comes up overseas, we might as well follow up on it. Spending a couple of years overseas might be a worthwhile experience for everyone, and the kids are still young enough to adapt. That said, there are lots of reasons not to move (for instance, it's a terrible time to sell our house right now). On balance, I doubt they'll offer enough to make it worthwhile. I suppose I'll find out next week ...

Don't take it personally Scots. He's probably not leaving Australia because of you.
Probably.
On a roll, henke!

Holy cow a lot has happened in two weeks.
So it turns out that the job offer wasn't quite enough for us to let us move (not quite enough relocation assistance to let us sell the house, not quite enough salary to let us rent it out).
I ended up getting a pretty exciting offer in Brisbane instead, but just as I was about to accept that, I received a better offer over in Singapore. So after all that, we're now going to Singapore!
Clearly, I am insane.
And, uh, thanks everyone for taking the time to tell me about San Fransisco ... :o

Hah, congrats but let's chat re: Singapore. I literally just hired an actuary who was there for 11 months.

From the the Height Ashbury and Castro Avenue to one of the most uptight places in the world. (well, technically from Brisvegas to.. but you know what I mean).
Quite the switch.

Oooh, Singapore. Lived there myself for a time (10 years ago now, admittedly, but still). Send me a PM, Chade, if you've got any questions and I'll see whether I can help you.

Interesting where life takes you, no? Ten years ago I was a dumb Polish boy staying up till 6am playing CounterStrike and Day of Defeat wanting to make vidya games. Today I am traveling around India meeting my friends while working an on-the-go web programming job for a US company, shortly after having finished a one year masters course in North Ireland following living and doing college in the states and study abroad in Japan for a semester.
Life's whack like that sometimes :p

Yeah, neither my wife or I have ever been there, so it's a bit of a leap of faith. The whole uptight thing doesn't bother me much: I could count the number of times I get drunk each year on the fingers of one hand. I could probably still do it while "drunk". Still, it's a pretty big change, and I'll be kicking myself if the family doesn't like it.

So what did he think of Singapore?

Thanks N'Al, I'll do that if anything comes up (I'm sure it will). Any general thoughts?

Let's put it this way: if there's one thing everyone in my family (parents, sister and myself) can agree on it's that moving to Singapore was the best thing we ever did together. Hope that helps. ;)
