Thanks for the suggestion. No it's not that. Graphics and gameplay are a lot better, probably 2nd generation, and I don't really recall any jRPG elements, though that makes it peculiar that there were stats and top-down-persp.
I don't want to highjack the thread though; I have some more leads (I possibly played it mid-1990, the same week the Gulf War broke, to be exact; and it was new then ... but it could have been on a later trip 1991-1993?), so I'll keep looking.
I realize trying to google search for it how hard it is to pin down a game when there are so many generic features!
Edit: Looking at Golvellius with fresh eyes again, it's really the only one in the field with top-down and side-scrolling, and there are other things that match my memory. So I guess that's it after all. I guess the graphics were really inflated in my memory (undoubtedly they looked better at the time).

Doesn't sound like Actraiser... You can't do the missions in different orders and your weapons don't build stats

Wouldn't know as I've not played it. Just seemed familiar.

It's a great game regardless, you should try it. It gets pretty hard though

I played Golveilius an extremelly long time ago. Its an ok game. Nothing spectacular. Theres far better games on the sms than it. Golden Axe Warrior (pretty good game for a Zelda 1 clone), Phantasy Star and Ys 1, to name a few. Cept their not 2D platformers.

A Boy and his Blob anyone? It's an old NES platformer. You'd give your blob jellybeans to have it change into different tools. I always thought the blob was kinda creepy looking though.

For the record, the side-scrolling portion looked very much like ActRaiser (judging by the video I just watched). I should have mentioned the protagonist was a European-like knight at that scale.
The look of the top-down part could even pass, but I don't remember a civ building part at all! Probably not it, but I'll play it just to make sure. It looks interesting in its own right, too.
And watching the vidoes of ActRaiser2, wow I like the art and gameplay on that (was it mentioned earlier?), it looks like another classic. (It might be that one, too ... I'll check).
Edit: I didn't see it previously ITT. So here's a screenshot:

Actraiser 2 looks sweet as hell graphically for sure, but every time I have tried to play it (which has been about 5 times now), I have gotten my ass completely handed to me before the end of the 1st level. It's brutal, and it will require persistence.
Maybe one day I'll really force myself to grind at it but I'm just not ready yet :)
