You got a slide puzzle you had to solve at the end of every level, which gave you some historical fun fact. Anyone who knows what game I'm talking about, don't be afraid to speak up.

I may be totally wrong about this, but that sounds like (http://www.mobygames.com/game/challenge-of-the-ancient-empires) Super Solvers: Ancient Empires. I played the hell out of that as a kid, though I'm not sure I ever beat hard mode.

Mega Man 2

Best game in a great series. A masterpiece. The recently released Mega Man 9 may actually be in the same class as this one. Haven't finished it yet, though.

Oh boy let's cover up blatant handholding with the illusion of nonlinearity! Sure the original was aggressively inaccessible, so we're going to take it to the other extreme and show the player exactly where to go with no need for exploration whatsoever! It'll be nothing like Super Metroid! Hooray!

I'm of the same opinion. I liked it, but beating the game in two and a half hours with 96% of the items...on my first try...was a bit of a letdown.

My votes go with the aforementioned Gargoyles Quest (which needs a better picture to show it off), Demons Crest, Ducktales, and most importantly, Rocket Knight Adventures.
