I like PBF and Penny Arcade but fuck that, I need to get in on some of this Blizzard action!

Stuff like PA or ctrl+alt+del is just some geeks way of dreaming his life was full of awesome stuff from video games.
Actually PA is mostly observational humour that takes its subject matter from gaming with the occasional in and in-in joke. Occasionally it is very funny. CAD is nothing like it and they should not be compared.

But then I am a fan of (
http://www.marriedtothesea.com/) Married to the Sea, which I suppose immediately identifies me as a tremendous snob. ;)
Just checked that one. Ugh. Should be called "Stock Art Married to Bad Puns".

Why, me. Coincidentally, I understood the Far Side most of the time and believe XKCD has turned from actually insightful and funny into just another webcomic about subcultural identification.
(
http://www.xkcd.com/525/) This one is from last week. What subculture am I identifying with to have found that funny? Or (
http://www.xkcd.com/523/) this one from a few days before that? Or... well really, you're just wrong here. XKCD has (
http://www.xkcd.com/26/) always been written for math/tech geeks. If anything's changed, it's that the strip isn't nearly as mopey anymore. I consider that an improvement.
Heh, I'd forgotten about this one--

My thoughts on the current topic at hand.
Penny Arcade: Occasionally decent. Better as a blog than an actual webcomic.
PBF: Always good for a giggle.
Achewood: King of All
Closing comment: If liking Achewood is wrong, I ain't ever gonna wanna be right.

The ongoing success of Penny Arcade is proof that nerds don't really care about lazy writing or even the existence of jokes as long as the topic concerns something around which orbits their lives.
Good looking strip, though. Half the team is towing his weight.
QFT.
That's twice this week I've agreed with Stitch. My world is crumbling around me.

PA is at least better than that other one with the miscarriage. .
It's very rare I read a positive opinion on CAD... but it obviously has its fans. Myself I find the humour a kind of watered down PA. Also he has a terrible habit of over-explaining the punchline, usually by having someone throw in a totally unecessary snarking embellishment; "excuse me but I like being able to use my legs" etc. And the serious bits just kind of sit uneasily alongside that.
PA itself I used to be really unimpressed with, but have warmed to.
XKCD makes me cringe for some reason and I'm still trying to nail down exactly why. Like the reflections on nerd culture end up being embarassing instead of amusing.
Oh wait sorry that MMO industry? Dunno, they'll probably be ok.

I haven't read PA regularly in years but that one up there reminded me of (
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2000/10/23/) this one (don't ask me why I remember this crap)
Similar sort of lightly topical snark. But at least the crazed expression in the last panel rose a smile, however briefly. The current one up there doesn't even have that going for it.
There was a good analysis of web comics I read recently that covered all that sort of fairly weak structural schtick that web comics, and game comics in particular, get mired in. This one is: illustrate current event you find absurd; question it; make extreme example along same lines.
The article also went on about the endless use of 'game mechanics in real life' as comedy too. I can't remember where I saw it. Probably in the last thread where we bitched about PA.
It's terribly weak stuff that wouldn't make the grade anywhere else. But I guess that's not the point since Garfield's a corpse of a comic and has been for ten years.
The way these web comics get these cliques that will just about kill for them is endlessly fascinating too.
Mega Tokyo was diverting back in the day. And this other one about some guys at college studying graphics and art, whose name escapes me. Not hilarious but readble and good looking.

Sounds like you're ashamed of being a nerd instead of embracing it. Or that you're not enough of a nerd to embrace it, so it just pisses you off.
