I've often wondered about the timeframe in which Thief is taking place (and in what universe). In an odd way, I would like to believe that the Precursors were, well, us (today)--that we destroyed our own civilization (thanks to our technology...anyone else see the analogy), and that the Thief universe is what has sprung up in the aftermath.
I think that's the secret dream of everyone here.
To survive a nuclear winter and get to live in the Thief universe lol

Either Thief or Discworld :thumb:

Sorry to dig up a thread about lost and/or buried civilisations, but to answer a question:
The elements on the coffin lid are paired opposites:
AIR/EARTH
WATER/FIRE
It is odd that they are not ordered according to natural placement, but the cancelling opposites was a theme and gameplay mechanic, so that was certainly on the artist's mind.

I'll suggest again the Deep One/Kurshok/Doom that came to Sarnath/Karath-Din connection.

Doom following a corruption of an order/race/faction, keeping within one of the major recurring themes running through all the games.:thumb:
And since there's no link to "Sarnath" in this thread:

And when I read that Sarnath (the real name, not Lovecraft's) means "Lord of the Deer", I immediately thought of TDP/Gold's parchment depictions of the Trickster with antlers, and Fawn, Faun, and Fauna. :p

Could there be a connection between Sarnath as "Lord of the Deer" and the Trickster? In addition to the first cutscene of The Dark Project, think of the deer skulls in Deadly Shadows that mark Pagan territory.

Maybe Thief takes place at some time during the past, where the magnetic field of the Earth allowed people to interact with magic, and people were also too distracted by all the progress that was taking place to write things down. Then some craaaazy cataclysm forces mankind to start over, and generations pass without any knowledge of how things used to be. Who knows?
