FO1-2 could be so fucking boring sometimes when you had to go through the whole slow action points crap even when facing some weak shit you know you could take out very easily. I tried replaying it again and i couldnt stand it.
I'm enjoying FO3 the same way i enjoyed Oblivion/Morrowind.. once their incredible mod community starts doing mods (seems like some of the old tools for oblivion works) it'll be even better..

Fast Turn Based?

it was still turn based though, which takes time. Arcanum was better that way.

I'd actually be willing to install the retail version without pirating it or using a crack.
DVD drive constantly occupied by game discs doesn't irritate you? It irritates me terribly.

That's why I have 4! :D

I'm sure it will irritate me eventually, and I'll end up downloading a no-DVD crack. But compared to the shit we've been putting up with from the likes of EA, a simple DVD check is almost a breath of fresh air. At least I can install it without feeling like my computer is being loaded with near-permanent DRM garbage.
Sad, 'innit? The game publishers have got the classic door in the face technique going right now. Any company that announces much less restrictive copy protection (like Stardock, which are not quite the saints they make themselves out to be) is going to be hailed as a champion in the industry. Tricky bastards.

VATS is indeed more balanced then I originally though. Not perfect - I really would've left the range accuracy modifier out of the crit chance, to prevent the point blank VATS shotgun = doom effect, but honestly, it was like that in F1 and 2. Course, the enemies there got that effect too.
Ammo is actually proving to be a problem, which is certainly a good change. Maybe it's just cause it's still early game and I'm gun happy, but I'm using the Rock-it launcher to kill things with tin cans more often then I'm using an actual gun anymore.
I've got mercs chasing after me, cause somehow I got a 1000 chip bounty on my head for being a goody two shoes. The showed up directly around me after a fast travel, so they were....well, close ranges VATS casualties.
You know why they've shown the evil side of the Megaton quest so much? Cause the good side sucks.
Dialogue is much better then Oblivion. It's not quite Fallout 1/2 quality - but lets be blunt, ever since Voice acting became standard, that level of depth on non-crucial characters ain't ever going to happen.
Wonder if anyone can mod in lean left/right. Would make real time combat a bit more tactical.
All things considered, I'm enjoying it immensely. I expected I was just going to waste $50, but the chance of it being great was worth the risk. It actually seems to have paid off.
So far, at least.

*imagines teddy bears fired from Rock-it launcher wiping out a whole squad of raiders and doesn't know whether to laugh or vomit*

Heh. Teddie Bears are rarer then bullets.
If it makes you feel better, use lawn mower blades. But really, it's a tin can and bottle gun.

For the people who have Fallout 3 already, how are you finding it? Did Bethesda muck about with the mechanics too much? Is VATS simply a boring, repetitive way of trying to shoehorn tactics and gore into the game? Finally, does the world have that very awful breadth versus depth feel that is completely unappealing about Morrowind.
