I have played a few episodic games, Walking Dead, Life is Strange, Wolf amongst Us, and Kentucky Route Zero. I think the one that worked the best was Life is Strange, they released the episodes in a timely fashion, and the cliffhangers worked well because of it.
The 2 Telltale games I would have been just as happy to play as one larger game. KRZ, while I think is good and rather unique, they have just taken way too long, if it is even going to be finished. Totally lost interest in it.
I do think it kind of encourages half-arsed storytelling where you dont really need a complete story arc, get people pulled in with the concept and then just make the rest up later.

I'm somewhat torn on Kentucky Route Zero: I am frustrated by how much time passes in between episodes, I won't deny that. At the same time, it is one of the most unique things I've ever played. It's fascinating in terms of how it looks, how it sounds, how it reads. It's also a story that is almost entirely about the characters and individual moments, not about overall plot momentum. The question that's on my mind isn't "What happens next?" but "Where else will this weird, wonderful, surreal, evocative story take me?"
But yes, they are taking a hell of a long time. Then again, they're a tiny team. What's the reasonable alternative? To take us on a shorter journey that is finished with one instalment? If the price for getting to the end is having to wait years in between, hell, for me it's already been worth it. The way the first episode ended... the song in episode 3... those damn bears... With its lightness of touch, KRZ has left far more of a trace on my mind than 99% of the games I've played.
But yes, every time I realise how long it's been since the third episode and how we still don't have episode 4, I feel like kicking a metaphorical cat.
