I was recently given a copy of Theif, but it won't play on my Windows XP...I know what they say in the readme.....but, is it possible, and how do I do it?

Oh, I'll answer before some of the cranky oldboys start scolding you.
Near the top of the thread list there is something called a Thief FAQ or similar, there you will find the answers you seek. At the moment of typing it is just above this one.

thank you very much.I want to read through to see how hard modding for this game is also.....been doing it for Morrowind for a short while...

It worked for me by running the setup file in win98 compatablity mode with visual themes turned off in the same options.

Personally I simply press ctrl+alt+del, look at processes, find Thief 1 or 2, and uncheck one of the boxes in their affinity someblah blah. Nope, I don't have a clue what that shit is, but I do what it says in the FAQ every time I wanna play. A bit annoying having to do it every time, but I don't play very frequently anymore.
...
This cannot possibly have helped.

That only works with hyperthreading processors since the affinity option is for stopping hyperthreading on that one process... and as far as I know, that only works for playing the game, not installing (though I could easily be wrong).
Eventually, for playing the game, I used the fixed exe file they link to in the FAQ.
