What I said was that having multiple Thief 2 directories would conflict if they were all named the same. The Install.cfg is just a pathway which directs the install of the Thief 2 directory. This is why I suggested to rename your backup directories.
The Runtime environments required, in case you need them to run NewDark:
1. Visual Studio 2008 SP1 C++ runtimes Available from Microsoft.com
2. Directx End-User Runtimes (June 2010) Available from Microsoft.com
3. OpenAL Installer Available from Creativelabs.com
