All I can guess is that it's something to do with a difference between the way in which the game handles OBB and Sphere physics: when the rope only has sphere, it seems to work. Put OBB on it through any means and craziness ensues.

I suspect ropes require the Sphere model because they are actually meshes, and not static objects.
