I'm having a problem with readable scrolls. I followed the instructions to the letter on Dromed Central, and I'm getting the message 'there should be a book here, but Thief couldn't locate it'. The directory is set up fine, and when I insert a pre-written .str file into the books directory, it displays itself properly. But my own one just doesn't work. Is there anything extra not written in the guide I need to know?
Thanks.

Have a look into your Str file, maybe you have forgotten these 2 little thinks" bllbla "? (inverted commas)

No, I included the double quotes at the start and end of the text. It's now working fine, however. It was just a simple case of restarting dromed. :)
Thanks anyway.

You have to restart Dromed to pick up any changes in a book .str file, unfortunately.

And to pick up changes to Book Art .pcx files too. You can't fool it by deleting the Book > Art or Book > Text on the object and reinstating it, I think. At least I think I did that a couple of hours ago ....:erg:
UPDATED: Nope. You have to restart DromEd. What I remembered was
trying that. I just forgot to remember the result. :erg: :erg:

I'm having the book string problem, where it says "There should be a book here, but Thief couldn't locate it", but I can't figure out why. I've restarted DromEd. I even just copy and paste an existing (working) book, and rename it, and redirect my book to that string name, and it still doesn't work.
It's quite strange.

OK, I've figured out the problem I was experiencing.
I have a working folder for my mission, which I keep in a folder called FanMissions.
So it looks something like this...
Games\Thief2\FanMissions\MyAwesomeLevel\
Which contains...
\miss24.mis
\Books\*.str
\Intrface\NewGame.str
\Intrface\miss24\Goals.str
\Strings\*.str
And I was putting my book strings in there, in the Books folder, as that's where I zip up my mission file from, and I'd assumed that DromEd was reading the book strings from there, seeing I'm working on miss24.mis in that directory.
BUT... this is NOT where DromEd is reading book strings from when previewing my level directly from DromEd. It is reading them from ...
Thief2\Books
So once I put a duplicate of my book string file in there, it's all working fine.
Hope that helps others who may have that problem. :)
(Note that you ALSO have to close and re-open DromEd for it to pick up any updated string files, as has been noted already on this thread).

Fortunately, neither of those things is still true with NewDark. :thumb:
If you use FMSel (or an FMSel-based loader) and want to keep your in-progress FM's resources cleanly separated, all you have to do is give it is to place your MyAwesomeLevel folder inside whatever folder you have FMSel install missions in. Each time you run DromEd or Thief for building/testing, just choose your FM in the FMSel (/other loader) dialog. The only caveat here is to never choose to uninstall your mission, as the loader will then happily delete all your work. (Frequent backups are still recommended as always.)
For testing book files without having to restart DromEd, just run the toggle_book_autoreload command. Then you can close and reopen a book and see its new content instantly. The command has to be run every time you start DromEd, so put it in your startup.cmd file to automate that.

Not exactly the same scenario but rather than starting another "Problematic Scroll/Book thread", here's my quandary.
My readables (OMs/FMs) won't stay on screen long enough to be read, they quit back to the game within seconds.
Anyone encounter this before?

I am using dromed v1.21 and no problems with book reading length of time.
