Greetings Taffers ^^
Oneday I decided to buy a soundcard based on aureal3d system (vortex chipset). I heard that thief supports A3D.
Problem is my OS in WinXP and there is no XP drivers for Aureal3d cards Im afraid. The question is, has anyone ever used Vortex1 in Thief 1, 2 od DS? However I have sound in game, but in T1/T2 unfortunatelly I can hear sound crushes (for example - hearing to many sounds at the same time -> the sound of a step doesnt end, its stays and make a horrible effect when I run throught the room).
In TDS many sounds are missing :(.
I would be very grateful for any advice, how to use vortex1 card in thieves.
My soundcard - Diamond Vortex1 chipset

I'm pretty sure I used to run Thief and Thief 2 on an Aureal 3D based soundcard. I would have been running Windows 95 or 98 though.
Have you tried any of these drivers: (

Otherwise, I'd look into getting a copy of Windows 98 and setting up a dual boot system.

thats a pity that because after repurchasing vortex technology by creative there was no support for vortex system in OS like win xp :(

That page I linked to listed Vortex drivers for XP. I've no idea who wrote them though. Creative weren't very happy when Aureal showed up - up until then they'd been pretty lazy with innovating. Their EAX wasn't as good as Aureal's 3D position sound no matter what they said - so they ended up suing them into bankruptcy.
The new X-Fi cards are supposed to have some kind of positional sound support but I'm not sure how good it is or how much support it has.

2 weeks ago i read an article bout X-Fi. Its a good SC, specially for headphones, but supposedly, its not as good as a3d :)
PS. I will put the link when I find it :)

Thief sounds great with A3D, and it is definitely worth your time and efforts to try and get it to work. I remember when I first picked up my SB Audigy card Thief was a benchmark for sound, and my old Dell sound card that used A3D technology kicked Creative EAX's ass!

@Biohazard, was it on win98/ME?
edit~
and now question bout aureal linux driver. Im installing Mandrive on friday and I wonder if there is any good driver on that platform. Is there anybody who has used linux and aureal3d sound card?:]

EAX = Environmental Audio Extensions (e.g. reverb, delay, flange etc.) and deals with simulating room acoustics and applying effects filtering. It has nothing to do with 3D audio positioning. Though I haven't spent any time with an Aureal card, Creative's simulated headphone surround was very impressive back in the day.
I purchased the first EAX card from Creative just before Thief and Half-Life were released. Those two games were phenomenal playing with EAX and surround sound - Thief especially, post patch. That card was one of the more standout technology advances I've experienced in all my years of PC gaming. I'd probably even rank it slightly higher than the switch to my first 3D acceleration card around the Quake/Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II days.
Sure their drivers tend to be bloated and buggy (though they're getting slowly better), but Creative has always had good hardware for gaming. From the first Sound Blaster, to Sound Blaster 16 Pro, to the AWE32 and on...
I recently purchased a new X-Fi card and I love the improvements made to both the drivers and hardware. Thief II sounds positively amazing through headphones with their new simulated 3D positioning along with elevation head tracking.
However, Creative loses a lot of points in my book for strong-arming id over software patenting.

PS. Has anyone installed T1/T2/T3 on Linux? Is there any chance to install these games? or ... emulating windows is the only way to play thieves on Linux?
