Procedure consolidation for newbies

Hi, although not a newbie, but have been away from this arena for quite a while, now being back there are some confusing things - for me anyway...

Garrettloader vs Darkloader how to choose between.... updating garrretloader, 1.41 before 1.42
- where to find them

Tafferpatch and TFix and "Thief 2 1.19" ((http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140088))

I found the above scattered throughout the site, and have no idea as to what more is missing, ( I thought there was something about key finding or cycling..)

Is there ONE location which explicitly details step by step for the above? I am trying to update my garrettloader, and found this..

I'm running Windows 7 also and have no problems with the latest release of Garrettloader. So if you decide to use Garrettloader, here's what you need to do:

1. Download version 1.41
2. Install it in it's own folder somewhere other than inside the Program Files folder (e.g. C\Games\Garrettloader)
3. Download version 1.42, unzip it and drag and drop just the Garrettloader.exe file into your Garrettloader folder and let it overwrite the 1.41 version you just installed.

I have no idea as to what enhancements to darkloader vs garrettloader could have been done even recently which could make garrettloader or darkloader obsolete.

Maybe I'm missing it, but I thought there would be a upfront (sticky post)procedure for the above, as well as downloads for scripts etc. or every other possible download & updates. I use to go to The Keep for all of this but am not sure if Komag is still available to keep things up to date.

I hope I am missing the procedure as it has taken me quite a while to find the above, but still do not have good procedures..

Welcome back! I'm not 100% sure what you're after but you will find the information on DarkLoader and GarrettLoader in the FAQ (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48202) here.

If you want to play T1/TG/T2 missions then use DarkLoader which is currently being updated. GarrettLoader is needed for T3 fan missions but is no longer supported.

The new patch, NewDark makes a number of things obsolete.

NewDark is incorporated in (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131106) Tafferpatcher for T2 and (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733) TFix for TG. Both of these include various patches and new textures etc. However, if you prefer, you can just use the NewDark patch (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140085) here.

There is a new fan mission loader included with the new patch and the installation/help thread is (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140093) here. Also, you might find (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139559) this thread useful for other information.

Nickie is quite right and has provided all the links but let me just add that if you're looking for a step-by-step procedure, I would suggest this:

1. Install the new Version 1.19 patch for Thief 2. This corrects many, many things and updates the game to work on modern machines. You can install it by itself, or by using Tafferpatcher. Tafferpatcher is a small program that makes installing Thief2 very easy. It has been around for some time and now it also includes the Version 1.19 patch. I recommend using Tafferpatcher. Be sure to read the instructions in the Version 1.19 thread as well as in the Tafferpatcher thread (first post in each).

2. You can do the same thing for Thief Gold using TFix (you might want to just deal with getting Thief2 working first and then do this).

3. Install (http://darkloader.net/darkloader431b1.zip) Darkloader.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista or later, do not install Thief or Darkloader in the "Program Files" folder. Choose some other location, for example "C\games\Thief".

I am trying to install the 1.19 patch. I have forgotten how to set Thief 2 to load without having the cd in my d/:drive. Like an idiot I forgot to save my cfg.s'. before doing a fresh install of thief and version 1.18. Which ones do I change and how do I do it?

Nickie and others, thank you for taking the time to reply, & yes I now see its' location, 6 items down under "Fan missions" ( just thought the sticky would be #1 or 2, so I missed it). Thank you for kindly outlining what you did regarding garrrettloader vs darkloader, very much appreciated!
