Some of those were downright hilarous. One thing that gets me is that I still wear Van Heusen shirts, they're the best.
I dont understand how the Daisy ad at the bottom is offensive though. Or even the toy m16 ad above it. Boys love toy guns and will always play with them. I'm getting close to 30 and I still do it, with paintballs.
Yeah, that m16 one's a bit strange. I think they put it there because it might encourage gun violence. But I understand the Daisy one -
real guns for the whole family, it's a bit creepy if you ask me

I dont like the look on No. 1's face.

We have come to a point where we are so seperated from our food procurment that guns are alien. Fifty years ago we were much closer with farm families instead of corporate farm entities. Guns then were not only a natural part of culture but you were much less likely to get shot by some crazy. We still had plenty idiots mind you. I'll never forget the time I wondered what would happen if you shot a transformer with a pellet gun and my cousin Rodney couldn't resist. Beautiful sparks and a day without electricity. A red ass too in those days. They have oil in those things.

Hey tBm, you've been around a while...was this the norm then? :)
Just curious.
Pretty much. But then the men were a little stupid, but the government did not screw with your privacy or life.
As for those who are offended by cigarettes and ads for same. Stay the hell away from where smokers are.
I would much prefer to have drinking beyond two beers or the equivalent banned.

For him it's apparently the norm now :erg:
Potty humour, ads that throw vaginas in your face, ads that promote excess drinking, ads that promote drugging everyone for the slightest ailment and mention side effects worse than the imaginary illness are more offensive than any ad posted.
Vulgar speech in public, the Pious Pornographers of Lady's home journal, and similar are more offensive than any of the ads.
I have no problem with woman excelling in any line of work or aspect of life. But this "it offends me because it ridicules women" crap is just that Crap. I am well aware of the fact that women can and often do a job or function better than men. I don't need the moaning libbers pissing and moaning about history fifty years ago.
Things change, and should, but if you are going to complain about the past, why not rant and rave about medieval times and the treatment of women. It makes as much sense as saying these ads are offensive.
It's really simple. If it offends you then don't look, don't read the book, don't listen to the music.
In other words, grow up and use the filter of history to understand that yesterday is yesterday. You can't change it. You can merely try not to repeat it.

But this "women's lib crap" is obviously still just that to you, so it would seem that you haven't considered your own advice at all.

This is really interesting, nobody's ever looked backed on the advertising world of yesteryear and pointed out just how profoundly things have changed over time.
You know what? Someone should make a TV show set in that era, that way you could point all of this stuff out, and if you're really good, you could use it as a vehicle for social critique of the modern era. You could call it "Ad Men" or maybe something like that. It could be fantastic!
...
...
Nah, it'd never work, people would never get it. They'd rather just guffaw at images on the internet and make douchey comments about the toilet humor of today.

It's a list of some 50 ads from decades ago (which were perfectly normal back then) that are extremely offensive. The good old days were not so good after all...
So are they perfectly normal or extremely offensive? I'm confused, tell me what to think TTLG
henke on 12/3/2011 at 09:15
tBm, why don't you show us some of the current ads which you find so offensive?
Sg3 on 12/3/2011 at 12:21
... Particularly the ones that throw women's vulvas in our faces. If they're pretty women, that is.
(Oh no! Sexism!)
