Pursuing the aside; I've only watched the first season of Mad Men, so maybe it gets worse, I dunno. But I can see why people might say they're rubbing 1960 in your face, however from everything I've heard about that period from people who lived it there's really no other way to do it. The Jet Age was that self confidently surreal and definitely would be to us. Shoving a new electric typewriter under your face and extoling its high tech mysticism and implying a woman could barely handle it, isn't a joke about how quaint the past was compaired to now. It's what they would have actually said back then.
There's an argument to be made that since its going to strike the modern audience who's seen a few sketch shows, The Wedding Singer or that 70s Show, as a joke and perhaps distract them then you shouldn't do it. But the rest of the show is done with integrity, so I learned to take it as reflecting the past rather than making fun of it. Which I'm almost certain was how they mean it.

It's less the photocopiers/typewriters and overt sexism, that's fine and often has a point - it's just that the show tries (and regularly succeeds, admittedly) to breeze through entire stretches on the 60s vibe alone; relying on the pure cool of drinking, smoking and womanising to be content enough. Perhaps my saying "oh ho ho" and "to the point of parody" sold my point the wrong way, I'm more inferring that it doesn't do enough with the era sometimes, instead relying on broad stereotypes.

See? The housewife who spends money on "Glade Sense & Spray" is much smarter than the man who comes home from work.
The skill to operate an incense dispenser sure is going to help her live an independent life when he leaves her and the kids to get over his midlife crisis by screwing his young secretary.
Or maybe baking a nice cake will bring him back?

I am slightly annoyed with those ads, although they are not as offensive as the old ads used to be.

Not to mention that a lot of today's ads strive to be offensive simply by going over the top:
