Is it recommended to play the first one before it's sequel?

That's something I struggle with when recommending this game. The first one is a really hard sell, but it helps if you've played it, so that the recurring characters and themes make sense. The way that souls, adra and gods all link together could be difficult to get a handle on without having played the first game. And the key story point for Deadfire, the manifestation of the god Eothas, has little to no meaning if you haven't played the first game.
So maybe, if you already have it in your library, stick the difficulty down low and do a "quick" run-through of the first game before starting the second?
Having said that, I imported my save from the first game so don't rightly know, but during new character creation I believe PoE2 gives you the chance to define what actions your character performed in the first game, so that might serve as a primer. I'll start a new character tonight to see what it's like and report back.

It really is the best turn-based RPG combat for me since ToEE.
Now you got my attention. I was a bit miffed at how Numenera turned out, but I've been hearing encouraging things about POE 2, so I'm getting my hopes up again. Looks like Obsidian is the real successor to Black Isle, rather than inXile.

Okay, so I just checked, and it doesn't really explain that much to you during character creation. So you'll at the very least want to read a plot synopsis of the first game before starting on the second.

While I've been mulling over reinstalling TOEE after the recent discussion, is probably fine to try a new IP in this genre. Come to think about it, I can't recall if I've played another isometric RPG since TOEE...
Anyway, just purchased PoE2 at a discount on the current Lunar sale (along with a bunch of other ones -- I guess I'll be busy for a while).

I'd recommend playing the first one to start off. Each has something the other lacks. The first one has some town building stuff, a cave dungeon which is quite extensive and ends with a super hard boss battle.
The second has the ship stuff + ship battles, inferior character portraits (though that more comes down to opinion) and dual classing which I particulary liked. I've yet to play the dlc expansion or the extra bosses that got added after I beat the game. So I cant speak on those.

Given there's an added discount available by bundling the purchase of both together, I've added the "definitive" version of PoE 1 to my previous purchase. I'll try it out first but as I'm more interested in getting knee deep in turn based at least I can easily switch.

Just remember to turn off the Kickstarter Backer content in the options for PoE1, otherwise you'll find a buttload of NPCs infesting your game that can be talked to, but otherwise offer no meaningful content. They're there to represent certain backers.

I couldn't find any option that mentions Kickstarter Backer content. Perhaps they've removed it?
Anyway, really enjoying this so far.

I think there's a mod or something that removes them, but it really doesn't matter because they all have colored (gold?) names so you know they aren't normal NPC's.
