Since Islamic extremism is not limited to the Middle East, I think Candidate 1 is the leading explanation. Latest example:

That was in Sydney on Saturday. There was a large protest here that involved trying to storm the US consulate building, rioting, some property destruction and injured police.
And then there's the home grown terrorists like the guys who bombed the London Underground, the Toronto 18, and the various US ones.
I know that protests can turn violent anywhere given the right ingredients (WTO, London 2011 riots, Greece anti-austerity riots, etc.). But there is something that sets the Islamists apart from the rest. It's something that drives a suburban mother in a wealthy city to show up to a protest with two young kids and a pram and make her young boy hold up a sign calling for beheadings. Something that creates a double standard under which they over-react to any perceived slight, sometimes violently, but it's perfectly acceptable to insult other religions and cultures, burn effigies of their leaders, and desecrate their symbols. And something that drives too many people (who are often educated and not impoverished or politically oppressed) to give their own life to murder civilians. It's the teachings of their religious leaders.

An unshakable faith that you are right is the most dangerous thought that is possible to possess. Doubt is the sign of a maturing wisdom. Children live in a world built on faith, and when that faith is violated, they throw temper tantrums. Unfortunately we have whole nations of children now to deal with, children with guns. I wish I knew how to send them all to time out.

The protests had nothing to do with the movie, at the heart of it all. It was just the excuse to do it. Alot of the protesters in Sydney were holding up banners calling for the beheading of Obama who had ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the making of the movie or its screening. The fact that a protest like that could happen here is truly disgusting to myself as an Australian, as protests like that go against everything that it is to be Australian.
I'm glad that the government has announced that anyone in that protest who is found to not be an Australian citizen will be deported. Whether or not they actually do it if they do find anyone who is I doubt, but here's hoping. People like that don't belong here. There was rumors on the news tonight of a 2nd protest being planned for Sydney again this coming Saturday and that the police are ready for it, if and when it happens.
I will be very happy when this war (of extremist terrorists vs the civilized world) is over and it is just something taught at schools in history class. I am betting that I will be a very old man if and when that day comes however.

I am pretty sure we'll all be long dead in our graves before that happens. There will always be some people who try and work any system for their benefit, and don't care who they trample on to do it. It doesn't even matter what system it is, some people will always look for personal gain and stuff everyone else.

The real irony is, of course, the video tried to make the Muslims to be uncivilized, violent brutes, but no one after watching it would have thought so. However, after the reaction to said video, many now do think the muslims are uncivilized, violent brutes. :tsktsk:

It is worse than the christians of the dark ages and that takes some doing.
Not sure about this. Nowadays they just have better tools.
Now the Kate Middleton's boobs -thingy has made news even outside the tabloids. Seems that a French court is gonna make a decision of whether some paper is allowed to print them or not. Somehow I'm linking in my mind the "You can't show videos insulting the Prophet!!" -demands with the "You can't print royal tits in a paper!". Not sure how exactly yet, but hmm...

Yes I read the video being made by a Coptic group, who understandably has an axe to grind. After the Egyptian revolution they were targets of violence, and I'm sure bad blood goes way back. I guess we can think it was irresponsible of them to do it that way, or at least not as productive as it could have been. Surely it's better to advertise their own victimhood. They had the total moral high-ground & pissed it away on cheap cracks. Still doesn't justify the violence in response though.
But I guess if they were spoiling for a fight they got it, and managed to drag all of us in with them...

I actually think that deporting non citizens is a great idea.
Uh, this is one of those issues where it may sound good on paper, but in social reality is not always simple. Anyway, I assume you at least mean deporting non-citizens that commit serious crimes like violence (not for littering or just protesting alone)... Ok, that's more reasonable. The US has this policy.
Deporting an entire ethnic group for the crimes of a minority is going over the line though. I think that's not what you meant, but unfortunately that is what many are trying to do here in Burma, deport all 800,000 Muslims in the country as "illegal immigrants" (nevermind they've always lived in Burma) for the actions of a few terrorists which just... I mean, as a matter of pure logistics & social reality ... you can't practically do (short of razing entire villages & ethnic cleansing =/ ).
