On that note, I finally got around to playing the 3D remake/update "Sinistar Unleashed" a year or so back, and found (to my surprise) that it was (

Really? Damn, I picked that up for 99p in a GAME clearout ages ago, but I've never even played it yet. :erg: Must dig it out and give it a go.

New screenshots. It looks absolutely brutal. I wouldn't be surprised if there's QTE's coming out of the arse though. PC, 360, PS3 - developed by Radical and published by ActiBlizz.

Quote:
Prototype is a completely new kind of open-world/action game, featuring a rich storyline filled with deadly shape-shifting action, 'Deceive or Destroy' gameplay, and a conspiracy 40 years in the making. In Prototype, players take control of Alex Mercer - a dark, genetically mutated shape-shifter with no memory of his past, hell-bent on solving the mystery of his existence as he tears through a densely populated New York City moving with Parkour-style fluidity and consuming anything that gets in his way. 'Deceive or Destroy' gameplay allows gamers the choice to either blend in with the population and covertly progress through the story, or fully unleash Alex's powers, and move through New York City like a walking slaughterhouse, taking control of military vehicles, and causing destruction at every turn.

i liked all I've seen over the years so far. most interesting part is the "web of intrigue"...if they really manage to pull off good story telling and character development through this "tool" I'd be surprised and it could end as GOTY material. but I think it will be the usual one-button-does-all QTE nobrainer they usually churn out these days. most time spent on making realistically behaving fire hydrants.

You may also know that inFamous is coming out on the PS3 in the summer. There's also Arkham Asylum of course. It's looking like it'll be an interesting year for the Superhero genre. If you can really think of Prototype in that way.

Reminds me a bit of Crackdown taken to the extreme.

For some reason, I remain rather meh about this game. I think the concept has some value, but from what I've seen so far around GT, the execution just seems to be missing a certain... something. The environments seem rather bland, and the action itself just strikes me as an overly gratuitous gorefest. Don't know, just can't get myself excited about it.

All great and fine, but why the FUCK does every character I play in a game have "no memory of his past?" Can I play a character who remembers back to the time he was three and someone stole his bicycle? That went to his high school prom? Got fired from Wal-Mart?
I'm with Ostriig. The main feature seems to be blood.
When does Alan Wake come out?

Was a kid running messages and picking pockets to keep his ribs from meeting his spine? :) Yeah, nothing wrong with having an actual established character.
I think the anonymous/amnesia gimmick has a few benefits... (a) it's easier for the writers to give the story an "unexpected twist" if they don't give much away at the start; and (b) they only have to write the bits of the back story that are actually relevant to the game. And, I guess, (c) changing things in mid-development is cheap.
As the games industry isn't exactly overflowing with uber-talented authors in my experience, I'm not surprised that many places opt for the easier approach.
And even when a good writer is there, how often do they have the time to flesh things out to their satisfaction before the game starts being built around it? I remember that the Thief missions were based around the story, and the Thief 2 story was based around the missions. There may be an element of preferring the one you played first, but Thief 2 wasn't nearly as memorable to me as The Dark Project.
Ah well. There are always adventure games.

Are there any good ones being produced anymore? I really liked Dreamfall, but didn't like Siberia at all (I was a Longest Journey fan which obviously makes me biased). I see lots of cheap adventure games on shelves still, I just don't buy them because they look pretty bland and gimmicky.
